PROVO, Utah – Add Wyatt Lowell as the latest BYU basketball player to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal. Lowell announced his intentions to enter the portal via his personal Instagram page on Tuesday. He’s the third BYU player in a week to enter the portal, joining Connor Harding and Jesse Wade.

“Grateful for the past and excited for the future. I have decided to put my name into the transfer portal and see what opportunities lie ahead! And thank you to cougar nation for the love and support,” wrote Lowell in an Instagram post.

Lowell joined BYU two years ago, making the trek down University Parkway from Utah Valley to Provo following head coach Mark Pope. A 6-foot-10, 205-pound forward from Gilbert, Arizona, Lowell was the highest-rated recruit to sign with UVU in the class of 2016.

Lowell redshirted his first season at BYU due to NCAA transfer rules and then this past year, his playing time was limited due to injuries. Last summer, Lowell tore his labrum, limiting his availability early in the 2020-21 season. Then in a road game at No. 1 Gonzaga, Lowell injured his Achilles, sidelining him for the remainder of the season.

Student-athletes that enter the NCAA Transfer Portal have the option to return to the school if their scholarship is offered. Upon entering the Transfer Portal, a student-athlete’s scholarship benefits expire at the end of the semester.

Mark Pope and his staff had exit interviews with members of the BYU basketball program after their first round NCAA Tournament loss to UCLA on March 20th.

Lowell will have three years of eligibility remaining for the next time he commits to play for. The Gilbert, Arizona native appeared in seven games during his BYU career. During his redshirt season at BYU in 2019-20, BYU coach Mark Pope said in his weekly coaches show that Lowell has “All-American potential” in his game.
