Instant Replay: Chicago Cubs Prospect Gets Good News In The Dugout

SALT LAKE CITY – Chicago Cubs relief pitcher Ethan Roberts learned he had made the Opening Day roster for the first time earlier this week.

On Monday, April 4, as the Cubs prepared to wrap up an abrupt spring training, their 2018 fourth round pick learned his performance in spring training had earned him a spot in the Cubs Opening Day bullpen at Wrigley Field on Thursday.

Roberts, who appeared in 39 games between Chicago’s double and triple- A affiliates in Tennessee and Iowa. Prior to hearing the news, Roberts had a batted ball strike his pitching hand before he recovered and retired the batter.

After taking a seat in the dugout, Roberts was approached by manager David Ross, “Hey, can you still shake my hand?” Ross asked. After Roberts assured his manager the hand was fine, Ross congratulated him on making the team.

Roberts did not see action in the Cubs 5-4 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Opening Day.
