SALT LAKE CITY – Kelsey Chugg has won the 116th Utah Women’s State Amateur Championship with a 1-up victory over BYU freshman Adeline Anderson at the Ogden Golf and Country Club.

It took all 18 holes to prevail, but Chugg jarred a four-foot par putt on the final hole to win her fifth Utah Women’s State Amateur title.

“It was not easy, I definitely felt like I earned my spot in the final and am just happy to come out on top,” Chugg said immediately following her victory. “Super special to have it here at Ogden [Golf & Country Club], this one has been elusive so to see some of my hard work pay off and to do it here in front of my former teammates, friends and family is awesome,” she added.

The match began with a birdie on the first for Anderson to take a 1-up lead, Chugg quickly recovered with and won the second hole with a par to tie the match. Anderson then went ahead again on the par 4 4th hole, only for Chugg to bring it back to even on the 5th.

Anderson found the greens difficult to handle and through the first eight holes already had three three putts to her name. Chugg make back-to-back birdies on five and six and at the turn was 3-up.

The back nine began in a similar fashion to the front, with Anderson taking control of the match and gaining two holes to bring Chugg’s lead back to one. Despite her best efforts, Anderson could not make a putt when she needed to and was never able to tie the match.

The victory for Chugg was an emotional one, given she played her collegiate golf just down the road at Weber State University. Friends and family flooded the golf course in support of both women as everyone in attendance showed appreciation for a wonderful display of skill.

Next year’s tournament is scheduled to take place at Jeremy Ranch Golf Club, where inevitably, Chugg will be favored to take home the silverware yet again.
