SALT LAKE CITY – Big 12 basketball produced the same amount of selections in both the men’s and women’s NCAA Tournaments in 2025.

Seven teams from the 16-team Big 12 are in the men’s NCAA Tournament and the women’s field of 68.

In the men’s bracket, Big 12 regular season champion and conference tournament Houston was the third No. 1 seed in the bracket. Kelvin Sampson’s Cougars are atop the Midwest region.

The Big 12 placed four teams in the Top-16 seeds of the field, with Texas Tech and Iowa State each earning 3-seeds, followed by Arizona as a 4-seed in the East region.

BYU, Kansas, and Baylor round out the men’s at-large bids.

Baylor is the only team from the Big 12 that will wear a road uniform in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The seven bids from the Big 12 in the Men’s NCAA Tournament were the third-most by a conference. The SEC produced a record-setting 14 teams in the field, followed by the Big Ten with eight.

Bubble popped

At the end of Selection Sunday, there was some controversy about West Virginia not receiving an at-large bid into the field.

West Virginia, who had a 6-7 record in Quad 1 games this season, was the first team left out of the field. The Mountaineers were projected into the field of 68 by every Bracketologist in the Bracket Matrix aggregate.

Instead, the NCAA Selection Committee picked Texas, Xavier, San Diego State, and North Carolina over West Virginia.

“Obviously, we are extremely shocked, saddened and disappointed with not being selected for the NCAA Tournament,” West Virginia coach Darian DeVries said in a written statement. “We strongly believe that we have a resume that is worthy of an NCAA Tournament team.”

In the women’s NCAA Tournament, the Big 12 was close to producing an eighth team, but they were ultimately left out. That was the Colorado Buffaloes.

The Buffs ended up receiving a 1-seed in the WBIT.

Iowa State was one of the teams that landed a bid as one of the “Last Four In.” The Cyclones, who boast star center Audi Crooks, received an 11-seed and will play Princeton on Wednesday.

Regular season and conference tournament champion, led by Hailey Van Lith, received a 2-seed in the NCAA Tournament.
