A Complete History Of Utah Football’s Matchups With Arizona State

SALT LAKE CITY — This weekend, Utah football hosts a familiar foe in week seven at Rice-Eccles Stadium: the Arizona State Sun Devils.
The Utes and Sun Devils have met 35 times, dating back to 1961. These matchups have spanned over three shared conferences and numerous eras for each program.
The schools were two of four to join the Big 12 Conference in 2024, and this Saturday marks their second straight meeting as conference opponents — the 36th overall matchup in the series.

The Last Meeting
Exactly one year before their 2025 matchup, Utah and Arizona State faced off on October 11, 2024.
The first matchup as Big 12 opponents set the tone for each team’s season, as they headed in opposite directions. ASU won the game, 27-19, and went on to win six of their next seven.
Meanwhile, it was the second straight loss for the Utes in what ended up being a seven-game skid.
Quarterback Cam Rising threw three interceptions in the loss. ASU running back Cam Skattebo punched in two TDs to secure the win in Tempe.

Utah Vs. Arizona State: Full Timeline Of Matchups
The First Game
The first-ever meeting between the schools took place in 1961 in Tempe, Arizona. The Utes won 28-26.
At the time, Utah was a member of the Mountain States Conference, and ASU was a member of the Border Conference. They didn’t know it, but that game would be the only non-conference match between the schools for the next 20 years.
The WAC Rivals Era
In 1962, both Utah and Arizona State joined the Western Athletic Conference.
They would play 15 games over 16 years at their first stop as conference foes. The Utes went 5-10 during this stretch.
Utah ended up staying in the WAC for over 30 years. The Sun Devils’ stay was much shorter, setting up the following era.
Non-Conference Foes Once Again
In 1978, Arizona State moved to the Pac-12 Conference, where it would stay for 50 years.
From then until 2010, the Sun Devils and Utes played just six times. All six matchups came from 1981 to 1993. For 17 seasons from the late 1990s to the 2000s, they didn’t meet, which is the longest break in the series’ history.
The six matchups during this period were all played in Tempe and were all losses for the Utes.
The Pac-12 Era
After a few decades in the WAC and Mountain West, Utah finally joined Arizona State in the Pac-12 Conference in 2011. The teams played every year for 13 years, except in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The first four matchups, from 2011 to 2014, saw four more losses for Utah.
In 2015, the tide turned. The Utes beat ASU 34-18 in SLC and then 49-26 the following year on the road. That started a stretch where they won six of the last eight between the two as members of the Pac-12.

Across 64 years and multiple conferences, Arizona State holds the advantage over Utah, winning 23 of the 35 matchups.
The Utes are 7-7 at home and 5-16 in Tempe.
