West Field Survives Thriller, Advances To Face Box Elder In 5A Playoffs

OGDEN, Utah – The West Field Longhorns overcame a second-half deficit to beat the Viewmont Vikings 41-34 in a first-round, 5A playoff thriller.
The Longhorns move on to face No. 6 Box Elder at 3 p.m. MT on Friday, October 31.
West Field hosts Viewmont in the Game Night Live Game of the Week to open the 2025 UHSAA 5A football playoffs on Friday, October 24.

First Quarter
West Field’s defense forced a game-opening punt to set up its first possession.
The Longhorns drive deep into enemy territory before a 14-yard touchdown pass from sophomore QB Easton Eilertson to junior athlete Gavin Ortegon for a 7-0 lead.
Longhorn defensive tackle Isaiah Rodriguez picked off a pass on the next drive, giving the football back to West Field.
The Eilertson to Ortegon duo needed three plays to connect for another touchdown.
On third down, West Field used the same play to free the dynamic pass catcher across the middle for a 14-0 lead.

Viewmont bounced right back with a deep touchdown pass to senior Jayson Dunroe.
A double pass fooled the defense, allowing Dunroe to get behind the defense for an easy 75-yard catch and run.

The high-scoring period continued with the Eilertson to Ortegon connection working for a third time to take a 21-7 lead.
Second Period
The Vikings moved into the red zone on their next possession courtesy of a deep completion across the middle to Dunroe.
West Field’s lead was cut to seven after Brett Tovey scored on the QB keeper around the left side.

West Field set itself up with a first down inside the Viewmont five-yard line, but penalties pushed the Longhorns back. Ultimately, West Field missed a 44-yard field goal.
Viewmont drove the length of the field on its next drive, eating up nearly the entirety of the clock. With less than 30 seconds left in the half, big play Jayson Dunroe worked loose for his second TD catch of the half.

The TD sent both teams into the locker room with a 21-21 tie.
Third Period
The Vikings took their first lead of the night when Benjo Tolman broke loose for a 21-yard rushing TD. The extra point was blocked, leaving Viewmont in front 27-21.
West Field came back with the fourth passing touchdown from Eilertson to Ortegon. The extra point gave the home school a 28-27 lead late in the third quarter.
Viewmont drove into West Field territory, but a last-second defensive stand lifted West Field to victory.
Fourth Period
West Field defensive lineman Logan McClure made the biggest play of the game when he intercepted a pass and rumbled 44 yards for a pick-six.
The Longhorns led 34-27 after a failed extra point.
Viewmont got the football back and used two deep pass plays to set up 1st-and-goal. Three incompletions set up 4th and goal-to-go for the Vikings with 6:41 left. Jack Savage took the snap and rolled to his left before finding Jayson Dunroe at the goal line for his third TD catch.
The extra point tied the game at 34.
West Field’s response was immediate. The Longhorns primarily kept the ball on the ground, moving deep into Viewmont territory with ease.
A holding penalty erased an Eilertsen rushing TD, setting up 2nd and goal for the Longhorns. On fourth down, Caden Judy took a pitch to the left, slipped out of a shoestring tackle, and trotted into the end zone. The Extra point gave West Field a 41-34 lead with 1:18 to play.
