Mammoth Defense Crumbles Against High-Flying Edmonton In Loss

EDMONTON, Alberta, Canada – The Utah Mammoth’s seven-game winning streak was bound to end, and it did in a deflating 6-3 loss to the Edmonton Oilers.

Connor McDavid scored twice, and Leon Draisaitl added another as the Oilers dragged Utah back to earth to end a four-game road trip.

Logan Cooley, JJ Peterka, and Barrett Hayton scored for Utah as its top two lines continue a recent scoring spree.

Mammoth stampede to league’s best record through ten games

Nick Schmaltz has come out of nowhere to lead the league with 16 points through ten games. His seven goals are fourth in the NHL, with all seven coming in a five-game stretch between October 17 and October 23.

The tenth-year forward netted a hat-trick in a win over San Jose, beginning a streak of games in which he scored 13 points in a six-game span.

Schmaltz hasn’t been carrying the offensive load alone, as he is one of four Mammoth skaters averaging more than a point per game this season.

Linemate and Utah captain Clayton Keller is tied with five players league-wide with 12 points (4 goals, 8 assists).

Third-year winger Logan Cooley wouldn’t be outdone by Schmaltz’s hat-trick, netting a natural hatty of his own just days later. The smooth-skating, sweet-shooting Cooley has seven goals and scored eight points in Utah’s past three games.

Dylan Guenther rounds out the quarter with 11 points (5 goals, 6 assists) and is tied with Carolina’s Seth Jarvis for the league lead in game-winning goals with four.

Pregame

First Period

A fast pace highlighted the opening minutes with neither team generating much advantage.

Utah’s attack put the pedal down midway through the period, taking a 1-0 lead when Logan Cooley kept his hot streak alive with a wrister that Dylan Guenther assisted.

Cooley now has eight goals this season, six of which have come during his current four-game points streak. Linemate Guenther has seven assists.

JJ Peterka gave the visiting club a 2-0 advantage when he put on the jets and beat Stuart Skinner top shelf on the rush. It was his fourth goal in a Mammoth sweater.

Utah outshot Edmonton 9-6, outhit them 5-3, and controlled the puck for the majority of the opening 20 minutes.

Second Period

Edmonton only needed 22 seconds to cut the Mammoth lead in half when Mattias Ekholm beat Karil Vejmelka for a goal.

Less than three minutes later, Isaac Howard evened the game 2-2.

Later in the period, Skinner misread the puck, and it immediately went badly for the Oilers.

Mikhail Sergachev sent a bouncing pass around the boards toward Nick Schmaltz. With Edmonton scrambling, Schamltz whipped a pass to Hayton in front of the net for an easy goal.

Seconds later, rookie defenseman Dimitri Simashev preserved the lead with a heads-up play.

With one hand grasping at his face after getting caught by an inadvertent Leon Draisaitl high-stick, Siashev located a loose puck in front of the net and dove headfirst into the play before swatting the puck away with his free hand.

It was Draisaitl’s eighth goal of the season.

Edmonton took its first lead seconds later when Ty Emberson’s first goal got by a sprawling Vejmelka.

Utah answered with a flurry of shots from Peterka, Cooley, and Guenther, but came up empty after Skinner controlled the puck.

Third Period

The Mammoth shorthanded unit repelled the following attack to remain within striking distance.

Logan Cooley drew a power play for Utah just over seven minutes into the final 20 minutes.
