Salt Lake County High School Basketball Players of the Week – Week 1 – Malei Atem & Sophie Nielsen

SALT LAKE CITY – The Hercules Salt Lake County High School Player of the Week is celebrating the best high school basketball players in Salt Lake County. Presented by Hercules First Federal Credit Union, each week we honor athletes for their exceptional performance on the hardwood. Our winners for week two were Malei Atem from Cottonwood High School and Sophie Nielsen from Brighton High School.

Salt Lake County Players of the Week – Malei Atem, Cottonwood & Sophie Nielsen, Brighton

Malei Atem and the Cottonwood Colts opened the season with two wins as Atem opened the season with 15 points, eight rebounds, three steals, two blocks and one assist in a 47-40 win at Brighton. He followed that up with 21 points, 15 rebounds, four steald and two assists in the Colts’ 55-52 victory over Riverton.

Sophie Nielsen powered the Brighton Bengals amidst a challenging start to their season, scoring 22 points while adding eight rebounds and two steals in a season-opening 59-29 loss to Wasatch. She followed that up with 28 points, 23 rebounds, five assists and three steals in their 59-17 rout fo Park City to notch the first win of the season.

Neilsen shined during a 59-54 loss to Corner Canyon as she went for 31 points, 12 rebounds, eight steals, one assist and one block in that loss and then was limited to six points, 13 rebounds and one assist in a 52-29 loss at Clearfield.
