Rob Wright III Career-High Helps No. 22 BYU Escape With OT Win Over Colorado

PROVO, Utah – BYU basketball found a way to dig deep and get a 90-86 overtime win over Colorado.
The 22nd-ranked Cougars did it without Richie Saunders, who left the game with an injury in the opening minute of the game.

To pick up the slack, Rob Wright III posted a new career-high, tapping into his best Jimmer Fredette impression. Fredette was recognized on Saturday with his jersey retirement ceremony.
The sophomore guard had a career-high 30 points earlier this week at Baylor. He passed that mark on Saturday in the Valentine’s Day matinee, with a 39-point performance.

Wright was a perfect 4-of-4 from three-point range and 12-of-16 from the field.
AJ Dybantsa finished with 20 points on 6-of-20 shooting from the field.
BYU improves to 19-6 overall and 7-5 in Big 12 play.
First Half
Under-16: BYU 7, Colorado 4
In the first minute of the game, Richie Saunders went down and was lying on the floor being attended to by trainers. Saunders got up and was initially assisted by trainers as he gingerly walked to the locker room, before walking on his own.
While Saunders was down, the Marriott Center went silent. You could hear a fan in the BYU student section yell, “Richie! Please get up!”
When Saunders left for the locker room, Tyler Mrus stepped into the game.
Under-12: BYU 18, Colorado 14
Tyler Mrus, in his unexpected opportunity to get early minutes, was making the most of it. Mrus knocked down two 3-pointers; his second was after a pump fake on a Colorado defender.
At the under-12 break, Colorado challenged an out-of-bounds call that went in favor of BYU. The Buffs lost that challenge as it remained BYU’s possession, costing Colorado a timeout.
Halftime: BYU 37, Colorado 32
Despite the absence of Richie Saunders, BYU was red-hot from three-point range, knocking down 7-of-11 in the first half.
Second Half
Under-16: Colorado 45, BYU 39
The Buffs opened the second half on a 13-2 run, while BYU didn’t hit a field goal to open the second half.
Under-12: Colorado 51, BYU 51
Colorado committed a technical foul, and a few possessions later, after a review, a flagrant foul was called on Josiah Sanders for hitting Rob Wright in the face with his arm.
Those two fouls resulted in four points for BYU.
Under-8: BYU 65, Colorado 60
BYU got its offense to come alive as Kennard Davis buried a three-pointer, then Aleksej Kostic got a steal, leading to a Rob Wright layup that Colorado’s Bangot Dak goaltended.
Rob Wright has been leading the way for BYU. He knocked down a three-pointer to give the Cougars a five-point lead at the media timeout.
Under-4: BYU 75, Colorado 71
BYU built up a seven-point lead, but Colorado wouldn’t go away. Buffs guard Barrington Hargress kept them within reach with some big shots.
BYU wasn’t helping itself with costly mistakes. The Cougars entered the under-four timeout with 13 turnovers that led to 19 Colorado points.
End of regulation: BYU 78, Colorado 78
Overtime
BYU had its first overtime home game since a victory last season against the Baylor Bears.
BYU got on the board first with a Rob Wright bucket, then Colorado’s Isaiah Johnson quickly answered.
Kennard Davis had a nice finish against Bangot Dak to get BYU back in front.
Colorado had open three-point attempts, but wasn’t able to knock any down.
The Buffs were 0-for-7 from beyond the arc.
BYU got a big triple from Aleksej Kostic with 1:21 remaining to put the Cougars in front by three.
Colorado was never able to cut the deficit to fewer than three points in overtime.
