PROVO, Utah – AJ Dybantsa continues to pile up the accolades during his freshman season.
The highest-scoring freshman in BYU basketball history was recognized on Tuesday as the USBWA Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week.
AJ Dybantsa: Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week
This recognition comes days after Dybantsa put together a complete performance in BYU’s upset win over then No. 6 Iowa State, where he played all 40 minutes.
The National Player of the Week award is named after basketball hall of famer Oscar Robertson, who played for the Cincinnati Bearcats, the Cincinnati Royals, and the Milwaukee Bucks in the NBA.
It’s the second time this season that a BYU player has received an Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week recognition. Richie Saunders was named national player of the week on January 13. Saunders has since suffered a season-ending ACL injury.
Earlier this year, Dybantsa earned the Lute Olson National Player of the Week honor on the heels of helping lead BYU to a comeback victory over Clemson.
Along with earning National Player of the Week, Dybantsa swept the weekly Big 12 Conference awards with Player of the Week and Newcomer of the Week recognition.
In BYU’s two games against top-10 opponents Arizona and Iowa State last week, Dybantsa averaged 32.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game.
He also shut down Iowa State sharpshooter Milan Momcilovic, holding him to 1-of-5 from the field.
Dybantsa is the nation’s leading scorer at 24.9 points per game this season. He also averages 6.7 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and shoots 53.3% from the field.
