Jazz Mailbag: Can Cody Williams earn his keep in 2026-27?

Apr 7, 2026, 4:34 PM

SALT LAKE CITY – Welcome to the Utah Jazz Mailbag! This week, we look at whether or not the Jazz can afford to keep Cody Williams next season.

Each week, we will send out a prompt on X and BlueSky asking for the questions you have about the Jazz.

Then, we’ll respond to as many as we can in that week’s Jazz mailbag in the Jazz Notes podcast.

Jazz Mailbag: Can the team afford to keep Cody Williams?

Question: Can Jazz afford Cody Williams next year and year 4? He’s a very expensive 10th man.

Answer: To answer the first part of the question plainly, yes, the Jazz can easily afford to keep Williams for a third season.

Even with the addition of Jaren Jackson Jr.’s $49 million contract, a significant raise for Walker Kessler, and the salary of another top-10 pick, the Jazz are not facing serious financial pressure yet.

That will change more noticeably during the 2027-28 season, when Keyonte George’s expected extension would take effect. Even then, the Jazz should have plenty of financial flexibility next season to keep all of their young players if they choose.

With Kessler’s extension expected to cost more than $20 million per season, plus the addition of another high lottery pick, Williams is projected to have the eighth-highest salary on the roster next season at just over $6 million.

That ranking could drop to ninth if the Jazz sign a player using most or all of their mid-level exception.

Now, consider how Williams’ salary compares to other playoff rosters, and who on those teams his dollar figure would be slotted between:

  • Oklahoma City Thunder – 10th (between Kenrich Williams and Nikola Topic)
  • San Antonio Spurs – 8th (between Steph Castle and Carter Bryant)
  • Denver Nuggets – 8th (between Zeke Nnaji and Julian Strawther)
  • Los Angeles Lakers – 9th (between DeAndre Ayton and Jake LaRavia)
  • Houston Rockets – 10th (between Clint Capela and Jae’Sean Tate)
  • Minnesota Timberwolves – 8th (between Ayo Dosunmu and Joan Beringer)

Based solely on his $6 million salary, Williams would average out as the 8.8th highest-paid player on a top-six Western Conference playoff team this season, closely mirroring his role with the Jazz.

Of the 12 players listed in Williams’ salary range, nearly half are on rookie contracts, still trying to establish themselves in the NBA.

More notable is how few of these players qualify as true difference-makers. Castle stands out but remains severely underpaid due to his rookie deal. Dosunmu ranks as the second-best player in this group and is positioned for a significant raise this summer.

Otherwise, most of the names are unproven young players or replacement-level veterans.

So what does this say about Williams and the Jazz?

As shown above, teams can take different approaches when building out the middle tier of a roster. They can invest in young players with upside, hoping they develop into contributors who outperform their contracts, or they can rely on proven veterans who offer consistency but limited growth.

With the Jazz just emerging from their rebuild and, outside of George, still determining which young players can elevate their games to a winning level, allocating middle-tier salaries to developing players remains a sensible strategy.

Given Williams’ notable uptick in production over the past two months, he’s probably earned that investment.

If the same questions persist next season, the Jazz may need to pivot toward a veteran with a more established résumé. For now, however, Williams represents a reasonable bet.
