Rocky Mountain Cup returns to Utah as RSL host Colorado Rapids

SANDY — Rivalries are not beholden to standings.

On paper, Real Salt Lake enter Saturday night’s Rocky Mountain Cup opener as the stronger side. RSL sit fourth in the Western Conference on 22 points, six ahead of the Colorado Rapids, and arrive off a commanding 3-0 home victory over Houston.

But the Rocky Mountain Cup has never been concerned with momentum, betting odds, or logic.

For two years, the trophy has lived in Colorado.

Now, with the rivalry returning to Utah for the first leg of this year’s two-match series, Real Salt Lake will get its first opportunity of 2026 to start bringing it back home.

A rivalry woven into club history

The Rocky Mountain Cup’s history is deeply intertwined with the history of Real Salt Lake itself.

On April 16, 2005, a sold-out crowd of more than 25,000 supporters packed Rice-Eccles Stadium for RSL’s first-ever home match. Fittingly, the opponent was Colorado.

With the match scoreless late in the second half, Clint Mathis whipped a free kick toward the back post where defender Brian Dunseth met it with a diving header to score the first home goal in club history and deliver a 1-0 victory.

After scoring, Dunseth sprinted to the corner, ripped the flag from the ground, and stabbed it back into place in celebration.

More than two decades later, echoes of that spontaneous celebration remain part of club culture. Following victories, RSL players now stand atop a platform in front of the supporters’ section, wave a flag toward the crowd, and “plant” it as part of the postmatch celebration.

In many ways, one of the club’s defining traditions traces directly back to the first chapter of the Rocky Mountain Cup rivalry.

A heated 2006 draw between the sides featured altercations involving future RSL icons Kyle Beckerman and Pablo Mastroeni while both were still representing Colorado.

Beckerman would later become one of the defining players in RSL history after arriving in Utah in 2007, while Mastroeni’s own path through the rivalry became even more intertwined over time.

Few people are more closely tied to Colorado Rapids history than Mastroeni.

Mastroeni captained Colorado to its first MLS Cup title in 2010, later coached the club, had his No. 25 jersey retired, and was inducted into the Rapids Gallery of Honor as one of the defining figures in the organization’s history.

Now, he enters another Rocky Mountain Cup match from the opposite sideline, attempting to bring the trophy back to Utah for the first time in two years.

Twenty-one years after planting the flag against Colorado in RSL’s first home match, Brian Dunseth will once again be part of a Rocky Mountain Cup night, this time from the broadcast booth alongside “Tio” Max Bretos on MLS Season Pass.

Tiny margins, lasting consequences

This year’s Rocky Mountain Cup will be decided across two matches:

  • Saturday, May 16 in Sandy
  • Aug. 29 in Colorado following the World Cup break

Last season’s edition showed just how thin the margins can be.

Colorado defeated RSL 1-0 at home on May 17, 2025 before RSL answered with a 1-0 victory in Utah on Oct. 4. With the aggregate score level, the Rapids retained the Cup as defending holders.

For RSL supporters, that technicality has lingered all offseason.

And recent history suggests there will be little separating the sides again this year.

Three of the last five meetings between the clubs have been decided by a single goal. Even when the matches open up, chaos tends to follow. RSL’s dramatic 5-3 victory in Sandy in 2024 was followed two months later by a 3-2 Rapids win in Colorado.

Rosters evolve. Form changes. The rivalry rarely does.

RSL looking to build momentum at home

RSL have won their last two home matches by a combined 5-0 scoreline, including Wednesday’s emphatic win over Houston Dynamo FC.

The club’s attack has continued to evolve throughout the early portion of the season.

Zavier Gozo and Sergi Solans lead RSL with five goals each, while Diego Luna has added four goals and three assists despite missing time earlier this season.

RSL have also found creativity from multiple areas of the field. Morgan Guilavogui leads the club with five assists, while Juan Manuel Sanabria has added four from the left side.

Defensively, RSL have also shown improvement at home, recording consecutive clean sheets against Portland and Houston.

Colorado remains dangerous despite inconsistent form.

The Rapids snapped a three-match MLS losing streak with a 1-0 road victory over Minnesota United FC on Wednesday and are capable of punishing mistakes in transition. Forward Rafael Navarro has already scored eight goals this season and is one of the most dangerous finishers in MLS.

Gozo expects another physical chapter in the rivalry.

“Obviously this is the biggest rivalry that RSL has,” Gozo said. “I think it’s always gonna be a dog fight when they come here especially.”

A new generation inherits the rivalry

The Rocky Mountain Cup has always carried a different weight around both clubs.

Founded by supporters in 2005, the rivalry has endured through playoff meetings, dramatic finishes, coaching crossover, and nearly two decades of Western Conference battles.

Now, another generation of players is beginning to inherit it.

For Utah natives like Gozo and Real Monarchs midfielder Griffin Dillon, who grew up attending Rocky Mountain Cup matches as a season ticket holder, Saturday represents more than another regular season fixture.

Dillon deputized for Noel Caliskan late in Wednesday’s 3-0 victory over Houston, drawing praise from the coaching staff after helping close out the result.

Now, the Utah native could potentially find himself involved in the rivalry he once watched from the stands.

“Just growing up and being part of those games, the rivalry and the history of these two clubs playing against each other, it’s always a fun one,” Dillon said after training on Friday.

“It’s fun to be a fan, but I think even more fun to be on the field now. So I’ll just do the best I can to make the fans as happy as I was when I was a younger kid.”
