SALT LAKE CITY — With two preseason games in the rearview mirror, excitement surrounding Darryn Peterson stretches from Utah Jazz fans to the organization itself.

But that sentiment preceded the team hitting the court for the first time on Sunday. The No. 2 overall pick was a major talking point at media day and at training camp availabilities in the following days.

Two traits keep resurfacing whenever Peterson is the topic of conversation: maturity and an eagerness to learn.

According to multiple accounts, Peterson has shown maturity beyond his years for a long time.

But the eagerness to learn and the speed at which he picks things up were intriguing to me. When asked about that aspect, Peterson talked about remaining humble and how open ears and an open mind will help him at this stage in his career.

I think its natural. I’ve been super humble my entire life. Everyone on the team has done what I want to do. Played in NBA games and finished seasons. As much as I can get going in, I think it will give me a head start. They’ve been giving me a lot of good tools. What to focus on and what to not focus on. It’s been great for me.

That part of Peterson’s character has stood out to people throughout the Jazz organization.

Over half of those who discussed Peterson touched on his maturity, eagerness to learn, or professionalism.

The Utah Jazz Speak On Darryn Peterson

Below are quotes from Will Hardy, Austin Ainge, and various Jazz players from media day and training camp.

Keyonte George:

We have different conversations, whether it’s on the court or off the court. He just wants to learn about the NBA life. He wants to know how to go about the day the right way. How to figure out what people to have around him, who to work with, and stuff like that.

Will Hardy:

I’ve learned that Darryn is incredibly professional for where he is in his career. He already has a pretty good baseline of routines. When we talk about professional habits, really what we’re talking about is having a routine. I think Darryn is a very serious young man when it comes to the work that he is doing every day. He has shown the ability to be a pretty fast learner.

Austin Ainge:

We’re really excited about him. He has brought an intensity, work ethic, and a maturity that is unique. The NBA is hard on rookies, he’s going to have some ups and downs. But we believe in his character and his approach.

Mo Bamba:

I do see a hunger and a willingness in him to learn. He’s so calm, and he’s so ahead of his time as far as maturity. I think he’s due for a really good year, just based off of his work ethic and how much he wants to learn. He picks up things really fast. It doesn’t feel like he is a 19-year-old.

Josh Okogie:

(He has) an eagerness to learn. He has the talent and skill. But the willingness to learn is what is going to take him to where I think he can go. I’m very excited for his ascension through this league.

Jusuf Nurkic:

I’ve never seen, in my 13 years, a kid coming in and being that mature for his age. (He is) so coachable and really has the talent to be great in this league. It will take him some time for sure, especially at that position, it’s tough. The tools he has and how much he wants to learn, it’s almost gotten to the point where we have to tell him to stay away from the gym. Usually rookies come in and they’re are all over the place, talking too much, and not coachable at all. For him, it’s totally opposite. When I see a person and player like that, I really want to help him.

The Building Blocks For DP

One of the most popular player comparisons for Peterson heading into the NBA was Kobe Bryant, who, ironically, has always been Peterson’s favorite player.

Kobe is my guy, and I’m inspired by him. So I just try to think, what would Kobe do right now?

“What would Kobe do?” is a fitting lens for the rookie’s first offseason. In a section from “The Mamba Mentality: How I Play,” Bryant described his own early approach with a striking parallel: “I would fire away with question after question. A lot of people appreciated my curiosity and passion.”

How far that foundation takes Peterson remains to be seen. But his maturity and eagerness to learn have already earned the confidence of teammates and coaches.
