Utah State ready to build on ‘barely enough’ win

LOGAN -Utah State football wide receiver Eli Wood was thrilled. He was also keeping score beyond the final result.

USU had a victory to celebrate, mistakes to correct and, finally, some time to catch its breath.

The Aggies erased a 13-point halftime deficit to beat Washington State 17-16 on Friday, earning their first Pac-12 victory behind a defense that shut out the Cougars after halftime. It was a breakthrough worth enjoying. It also reminds us how thin the margin remains.

“We just executed barely enough, barely enough tonight,” Wood said. “We have a lot to clean up. Can’t do some of the things we did. But at the end of the day, that was a dub.”

For Utah State, the bye week is an opportunity to turn the relief of one win into something more reliable. The Aggies showed they could fight through mistakes. Now they need to stack good practices and clean plays together, pairing their resilience with the discipline to avoid another uphill climb. They must do it while managing a roster whose health is already affecting practice.

Coach Bronco Mendenhall sees room to demand improvement without diminishing what his team accomplished.

“Plenty to correct, but I’m not going to for a second take anything off of how they fought back and won the game,” Mendenhall said.

Turning belief into better execution

The response started before Utah State returned to the field for the second half.

Mendenhall said players and assistant coaches owned the halftime adjustments, with teammates holding one another accountable. He offered only one sentence before the Aggies returned to the field.

Linebacker Asher Cunningham described a message built around carrying the work from practice into the game rather than letting frustration take over.

“Just keep your heads up. Just keep going, keep pounding,” Cunningham said.

Wood saw the same resolve.

“We never quit, and we always just had that belief that we were going to win the game,” he said.

Belief helped Utah State stay in the game. Cleaner football helped the Aggies win it.

Mendenhall praised the second-half precision and the ability to make critical plays when opportunities arrived. But the opening kickoff fumble and a personal foul that extended a Washington State scoring drive illustrated how quickly mistakes can undermine effort.

The next challenge is to make the execution that fueled the comeback less sporadic and less dependent on having no margin for another mistake.

“Discipline has to be part of that. Precision has to be part of that,” Mendenhall said of the team’s effort to win.

There is no shortcut waiting on the other side of the bye.

Asked about improving the offense, Mendenhall pushed back on the idea that one adjustment would suddenly solve everything.

“We just keep chipping away, and I know everyone’s racing for, or really would like me to announce, some magical tactic,” he said. “There isn’t one. We’re just methodically working to improve.”

For Wood, that work begins with looking inward.

“I mean, we got to clean up a lot of things, and it starts with me,” he said.

A chance to recover without standing still

The bye offers room for that improvement. Just as importantly, it offers relief.

Mendenhall’s reaction to the timing question required little interpretation.

“Hallelujah. I mean, like, it couldn’t be any more needed,” he said. “And yeah, desperate is not quite the right word, but perfect.”

The physical toll is already affecting how Utah State prepares.

Mendenhall said the need to get players to games healthy has begun altering practice, creating a balancing act between preparation and preservation.

“Keep your best players not only prepared but healthy,” he said. “It’s going to make a difference.”

That leaves the Aggies with two priorities during the break: address the mistakes that made Friday harder than it needed to be, and give a worn-down roster an opportunity to recover.

Neither diminishes the thrill of the comeback. Winning simply gives Utah State a better starting point for the next round of corrections.

“So we’re growing, and no one wants it to be faster than me,” Mendenhall said. “But there’ll be a lot to teach from and fun to teach when you win.”

Friday showed Utah State could overcome a difficult first half. The work during the bye is to give the Aggies fewer mistakes to overcome the next time they take the field—without losing the fight that carried them through this one.

For Wood, “barely enough” was enough to celebrate. For Utah State, the opportunity now is to make it the starting point, not the standard.
