Week 1: Friday night’s Utah high school football nonregion recap

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah high school football is back up.
After a three-game appetizer Thursday that included Mountain Ridge’s statement-making win over Skyridge, the Utah high school football season returned to a full slate of 55 games Friday night.
There were headliners, like defending 6A champion Corner Canyon’s first game under head coach Casey Sutera on the road against Region 1’s Davis, and less-headlining tilts all the way down to 1A eight-player games in rural Utah.
Here’s a look around the state for Friday, Aug. 14, with scores courtesy of the Deseret News.
Here’s what you may have missed.
Nonregion games
Colton Johns threw four touchdowns to four difference receivers, and Chris Munroe ran for two more as the Eagles shut out the Wolverines in a mid-afternoon game.
Djaylan Gomes, Memphis Hunkin, Synic Harvey and Jahmi Harrison-Bismillah each caught a touchdown pass for LCA (1-0), which led 48-0 at halftime to initiate the UHSAA’s 44-point mercy rule.
Grady Anderson threw for four touchdown, ran for another and caught one from Brady Ramsay as the Cowboys jumped out to a 20-7 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.
Latimer Glover and Brennan Orton each caught two touchdown passes for Kanab (1-0).
Ajay Thomas had a touchdown passing and another rushing to lead the Spartans (0-1).
Deacon Virgin threw three touchdown passes, and the Thunder rolled up three more rushing scores to blow by the Huskies.
Jace Floyd ran for two touchdowns, and the Falcons’ defense pitched a shutout in a rout of the Beetdiggers.
Owen Williams connected with Preston Higgins and Dustin Hallows for Canyon View (1-0), which led 21-0 at halftime and cruised to the finish.
Porter O’Mealy’s 4-yard touchdown run with 6:15 remaining in the fourth quarter proved to be the difference as the Rebels held off the Bulldogs in a season opener.
Kyle Keith found Brody Knudsen for an 80-yard touchdown with 5:48 remaining for Gunnison Valley, which fell behind 14-7 at halftime following Max Weston’s 28-yard touchdown from Paxton Nicolodemos for Rich.
Mountain Crest 49, Deer Creek 0
Brady Muir accounted for four passing touchdowns and another on the ground as the Mustangs rolled by the first-year Riverhawks in the first game played at the newest high school in the Heber Valley.
Kael Olsen caught two touchdown passes for Mountain Crest (1-0), which also got rushing scores from Brock Hunter and Tayton Page in the game called after three quarters due to the UHSAA’s 44-point mercy rule.
North Sanpete 57, Cottonwood 0
Luke Lee threw a pair of touchdown passes, and the Hawks scored four touchdowns and a safety in the first quarter to overwhelm the Colts and trigger the UHSAA’s 44-point mercy rule after the third quarter.
Trevor Mann rushed for 157 yards and a touchdown pace North Sanpete’s ground game.
Kami Vaenuku scored on a 3-yard touchdown run with four seconds remaining to help the Buffaloes outlast the Cougars in a season opener.
Gus Pater rattled off an 18-yard touchdown run with 11:07 left in the half as Tooele (1-0) pitched a first-half shutout.
But Union did all its scoring in the fourth quarter, including Bryson Winterton’s 27-yard field goal with 2:33 to go that gave the Cougars (0-1) a 10-7 advantage before Vaenuku’s heroics.
Sam Brown opened the scoring with a 32-yard pick-six just 28 seconds into the game, and Preston Ferran threw four touchdown passes as the Titans overwhelmed the Aviators for a road win.
Ferran’s fourth touchdown pass, a 44-yard strike to Wilson Booth with 3:21 left in the half, gave Olympus (1-0) a 49-0 halftime score.
Noah Fief ran for three touchdowns to help the Riverhawks pull past the Trojans on the road.
Krew Asay returned an interception 42 yards for a touchdown to open the scoring and give Morgan a 7-0 lead early.
But Ridgeline (1-0) rattled off 28-straight points to take a 28-7 halftime lead on Fiefia’s second touchdown via five-yard run.
After Asay returned another interception 25 yards for a score, Fiefia helped the Riverhawks ice the game with a 19-yard TD run with 1:34 left in the third quarter.
North Summit 14, Enterprise 13
Jaden Rowser and Knox Woolstenhulme each scored a rushing touchdown to help the Braves hold off the Wolves in a nonregion game.
Jake Christensen scored on a pair of TD runs for Enterprise, including an 11-yard plunge with 1:27 remaining. But the two-point conversion run failed, and the Wolves could get no closer.
Cordon White threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more as the Wildcats rolled past the Flyers.
Ngalu Taufatofua also ran for two touchdowns for Richfield (1-0), who jumped out to a 48-14 lead at halftime and never looked back.
Riker Muhlestein scored three touchdowns, including two with his arm, to lead Dixie (0-1).
Dru Reuss scored six touchdowns to lift the Spartans to an explosive win over the Utes.
Reuss’ 4-yard TD strike to King Yom with 9:34 left in the third quarter pushed Murray (1-0) to a 35-7 lead. But the Utes scored 26 points in the fourth quarter as Landon Woods totaled five touchdowns before Reuss’ second touchdown to Yom with six minutes on the clock helped Murray pull away for good.
Logan Holloway accounted for five touchdowns as the Timberwolves blew past the Soaring Eagle.
Holloway threw three touchdown passes and scored on runs of 1 and 31 yards as Timpanogos (1-0) jumped out to a 31-3 lead at halftime and never looked back.
Easton Favero found Royce Sargent with a pair of touchdowns, and Royce Sargent plunged in from the 2-yard line with 17 seconds left to lift the Grizzlies by the Bears.
Rigby Young accounted for all of the scoring for Summit Academy, throwing for two touchdowns and running for another on a 10-yard run that gave the Bears a 21-18 lead with 2:26 remaining.
Cash Hollingshead threw for two touchdowns and ran for another to help the Skyhawks soar by Granger in a season opener for both teams.
Lindon Woodland returned an interception 34 yards for a touchdown less than two minutes into the game, and Salem Hills (1-0) never looked back en route to a 27-0 halftime lead.
Maa’imoa Havili scored the Lancers’ lone touchdown on a 3-yard run with 2:00 left in the fourth quarter.
Preston Wilkinson threw five touchdown passes, including four to Eli Braegger to lift the Bears by the Tigers.
Ty Hess opened the scoring with a 16-yard TD catch from Wilkinson with 2:33 left in the second quarter before Bear River outscored the hosts 29-13 in the second half and used a 14-0 fourth-quarter spurt to pull away for good.
Lone Peak 33, Crimson Cliffs 21
Zach Zolman connected on four field goals and three PAT, including a 50-yarder with 1:52 left on the clock to help the Knights pull away from the Mustangs.
Cruz Christensen added two touchdowns for Lone Peak (1-0), which got a 99-yard pick-six from Krew Robinson in the win.
Tanoai Andresen threw two touchdown passes for Crimson Cliffs.
Utah commit Diesel Dart hauled in two as the Chargers turned a 7-6 halftime edge into a 37-point rout over the Darts.
Jaxon Pehrson threw for 206 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 103 yards for Corner Canyon (1-0), who totaled 460 yards of offense and held Davis to 268.
Brodie Scheinberg threw two touchdown passes for Davis (0-1), including a 28-yard strike to Oklahoma commit Bode Sparrow with 7:01 remaining.
Austin Cannon erupted for a 55-yard touchdown grab from Cash Hawkins, and the Vikings never backed down in shutting out Bonneville.
Jesse Johnson added a 2-yard TD plunge to stretch the lead to 14-0 at halftime, and Miles Frey’s 8-yard TD keyed a 10-0 third quarter as Viewmont (1-0) cruised by the Lakers (0-1).
Jay Thompson ran for two touchdowns, and Moises Cendejas added another as the Bengals overwhelmed the Longhorn.
Adam Price kicked a pair of field goals to seal the shutout for Brighton (1-0).
Ethan Hill threw two touchdowns to Logan Beck to guide the Grizzlies to a shutout win over the Knights.
Ryder Mitchell added a rushing touchdown for Copper Hills (1-0), which got three field goals from Lincoln Anderson.
American Fork 36, Pleasant Grove 16
Jake Matsen threw a pair of touchdowns including a 7-yard strike to Zack Cowie during a 14-7 fourth quarter to help the Cavemen pull away from the Vikings.
Noah Behm added a 64-yard pick-six for American Fork (1-0), and Dalin Afu sealed the road win with a 10-yard fumble recovery with 4:19 remaining.
Pleasant Grove (0-1) did all its scoring on Corbin Robbins’ 30-yard pick-six to start the game, and Robbins’ 94-yard kick return touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Fillisi Filipe scored three touchdowns on the ground as the Mustangs pulled past the Redhawks.
Filipe opened the game with a 54-yard TD run in the first quarter, and capped the scoring with 73-yard touchdown with 1:14 remaining to put the game away for good.
Madden Parks’ 3-yard TD run capped a 14-0 run for Bountiful (0-1) that brought the Redhawks within five, 19-14.
Hayden Schneider threw three touchdowns to Tavin Hill to lead the Silverwolves in a rout of the Jaguars.
Russell Whiting and Austin Morris each ran for a score for Riverton (1-0), who jumped out to a 28-7 lead in the third quarter.
Timpview 40, Layton 21
TJ Tuha ran for three touchdowns, including a 41-yarder with 36 seconds left in the third quarter to pull away from the Lancers.
Tillman Thomas threw three touchdown passes to lead Layton (0-1).
Olympus 49, Cedar Valley 14
Preston Ferran threw four touchdown passes and ran for another as the Titans rolled to a 49-0 lead and blasted the Aviators in Casey Evans’ debut as head coach.
Sam Brown returned an interception 32 yards for a touchdown during a 35-point first quarter for Olympus (1-0), which got receiving touchdowns from Wilson Mooth, Eli Rhees, Wyatt Fuhriman and Kempton Rice.
Cash Thacker threw a pair of touchdown passes to Keali’i Sissouphanh in the second half to lead Cedar Valley (0-1).
Clearfield 24, Cyprus 7
Bryson Ridge and Micah Salazar set the tone early with a pair of first-quarter touchdowns as the Falcons rolled by the Pirates.
Ridge sealed the win with a 95-yard kick return in the third quarter for Clearfield (1-0).
Cody Campbell scored the lone touchdown for Cyprus (0-1).
Sky View 13, Park City
Peyton Palmer’s six-yard touchdown run proved the difference as the Bobcats edged the Miners in overtime.
It was Palmer’s second touchdown of the game after catching an 18-yard pass from Tucker Stokes in the fourth quarter to tie the game. After the Miners (0-1) took a lead in overtime on Knox Groenenboom’s 35-yard field goal, Palmer finished the game with a touchdown on the next possession.
Lehi 35, Maple Mountain 13
Sam Verbecky scored two touchdowns as the Pioneers used a 21-6 first quarter to pull away from the Golden Eagles.
Briggs Jensen connected for two touchdown passes with Cam Wren for Lehi (1-0).
Joey Imperial tossed a pair of TD strikes for Maple Mountain (0-1).
Green Canyon 10, Provo 6
Ethan Munk’s 27-yard touchdown to Huston Paremski and Boston Daines’ 34-yard field goal helped the Wolves pull out a defensive win over the Bulldogs.
Teave Brown scored on a 4-yard run for Provo with 6:22 left in the third quarter, but the Bulldogs missed the extra point before falling by four.
American Leadership 23, Carbon 21
Mason Ober’s second touchdown of the game on 2-yard run in double overtime was the difference as the Eagles edged the Dinos.
Wesley Haston and Cooper DuPaix each threw a touchdown pass for ALA (1-0).
Tayger Timothy pulled down a pair of touchdown passes for Carbon (0-1).

Westlake 42, Highland 21
Dylan Blakey ran for two touchdowns, and Ashton Taylor added another to help the Thunder by the Rams.
Silas Taumoepeau tossed three touchdowns for Westlake (1-0) in the win.
Woods Cross 27, Syracuse 26
Tage Ita ran for a pair of touchdowns as the Wildcats held off the Titans.
Delta 29, Juab 26
Bodey Shurtz ran for three touchdowns to power the Rabbits by the Wasps.
Price Armstrong threw three touchdown passes for Juab.
Alta 38, Springville 35
Treven Cooke scored two rushing touchdowns to guide the Hawks past the Red Devils.
Beckett Burton threw three touchdown passes for Springville, and Sam Nadauld had two touchdown receptions.
Roy 54, Taylorsville 7
Gunner Pearson ran for four touchdowns, and Howie Howard scored three as the Royals scored 54-unanswered points to rally by the Warriors in the mercy-rule win.
West 20, Arbor View (Nev.) 14
Dovani Dixon scored on a 4-yard run with 1:14 remaining to help the Panthers by the Aggies.
Michigan quarterback commit Kamden Lopati threw a touchdown pass to Monson Vaenuku, and Naeata Hamilton added a TD run for West (1-0).
Farmington 14, Bingham 11
Owen Morris’ second field goal of the game from 21-yards out with 12 seconds remaining helped the Phoenix rally by the Miners.
Beckham Greaves scored on a 3-yard reception from Knox Dawson with 6:49 remaining to take the lead for Bingham (0-1) before Farmington (1-0) won it.
Tafuna (American Samoa) 46, East 0
Tafuna rolled up 46 points by the 9:14 mark of the fourth quarter to upend East’s season opener by mercy rule.
North Sevier 41, Ben Lomond 33
Houston Mickelsen ran for two touchdowns to help the Wolves (1-0) survive the Fighting Scots.
DaShawn Gordan ran for two touchdowns to lead Ben Lomond (0-1).

The Trojans held the Patriots out of the end zone until the fourth quarter to cruise to the win.

Kadyn Reyes threw for two touchdowns and ran in two more as the Bees shut out the Golden Eagles.

Beaver’s Davis Carter ran for two touchdowns and threw for another in a loss to the Pirates.

Carter Bell ran for three touchdowns as the Cowboys overturned a 12-0 early deficit to pull away for the win.
