No. 16 BYU Drops Third Straight With Upset Loss At Oklahoma State

The struggles for BYU basketball continue as the 16th-ranked Cougars extend their losing streak to three games.

BYU lost to Oklahoma State 99-92 on Wednesday night in front of a crowd of 7,186 fans at Gallagher-Iba Arena.

BYU star AJ Dybantsa scored 36 points to lead all scorers, while the BYU “Big Three” combined for 71 points, but it wasn’t enough.

Oklahoma State’s Anthony Roy scored 30 points and was one of five players for the Pokes to reach double-figures.

BYU committed 16 turnovers, and Oklahoma State scored 21 points off them.

The Cougars drop to 17-5 overall and 5-4 in Big 12 play. Next up is a Saturday night home game against No. 8 Houston.

Oklahoma State gets a signature victory in Big 12 play, and a win that could potentially put them in Bracketology forecasts moving forward. The Cowboys improve to 16-6 overall and 4-5 in the Big 12.

After the conclusion of the game, Oklahoma State fans rushed the Gallagher-Iba Arena floor to celebrate the victory.

First Half

Under-16: Oklahoma State 4, BYU 2

Once again, BYU starts slow offensively. That’s the bad news. The good news, so did Oklahoma State.

Both teams had four turnovers each, with three of those giveaways coming from AJ Dybantsa in the opening stretch of play.

Under-12: Oklahoma State 18, BYU 9

At the second media timeout, BYU had eight turnovers. Oklahoma State is not known for its defense, but they are making life difficult for BYU, creating six steals.

Under-8: Oklahoma State 31, BYU 18

Oklahoma State’s Jaylen Curry did his best Steph Curry impression with a difficult reverse layup.

Under-4: Oklahoma State 41, BYU 33

The three-point shot came alive for BYU after trailing by 15 points. BYU knocked down three consecutive triples, one from Richie Saunders and then back-to-back treys from AJ Dybantsa.

Halftime: BYU 41, Oklahoma State 41

BYU closed the half on a 19-4 run to tie the game up. AJ Dybantsa ended the half with a slam dunk, down the middle of the lane.

Dybantsa finished the first half with 18 points.

Oklahoma State finished on a 3:18 scoring drought.

Second Half

Under-16: Oklahoma State 51, BYU 50

Richie Saunders buried a three-pointer to give BYU its first lead of the game at 46-45, but then Victorius Miller put together his own 5-0 run to get Oklahoma State back on top.

Under-12: Oklahoma State 67, BYU 61

Kennard Davis knocked down two 3s to give BYU a one-point lead. Then Oklahoma State quickly responded with a 7-0 run to regain the lead.

AJ Dybantsa was called for a flagrant one foul call after his elbow caught the face of Andrija Vukovic. Oklahoma State wasn’t able to take advantage of the free throws and extra possession.

Under-8: Oklahoma State 71, BYU 64

Jaylen Curry continues to come up with big shots to lead the Pokes in scoring with 13 points. Oklahoma State secured an offensive rebound on the next possession, leading to Coleman driving to the basket for a bucket.

Under-4: Oklahoma State 81, BYU 71

Anthony Roy was lighting it up for Oklahoma State, knocking down three consecutive field goals for the Pokes, which included two 3-pointers.

Kevin Young called a timeout before the media timeout, and in an ATO, Mihailo Boskovic missed a three-pointer that Rob Wright gathered on an offensive rebound, went back up, and drew the foul with the bucket.

Final: Oklahoma State 99, BYU 92

The Pokes did an excellent job of beating BYU’s full-court press and drew fouls on the Cougars. Oklahoma State knocked down 14 free throws in the final 3:39 of game action.
