BYU basketball reportedly lands big man from Poland

PROVO –  BYU basketball has reportedly landed a frontcourt big from the international ranks.

Jakub Urbaniak from Poland has committed to BYU, according to Jonathan Givony of DraftExpress.

Urbaniak is listed at 6-foot-9 and could fill the much-discussed void BYU has at center for the 2026-27 season.

BYU basketball assistant coach Chris Burgess said in an interview on Monday, July 20, with BYUtv that they were hoping to get a center added by August. It appears they have done that.

This past season, Urbaniak played for Slask Wroclaw in Poland. He’s also played games for Poland in the FIBA Basketball World Cup European Qualifiers, as recently as this month.

Urbaniak is 23 years old; he will turn 24 in January.

For Slask Wroclaw in the EuroCup for the 2025-26 season, Urbaniak played 22.4 minutes per game, averaging 7.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, and shooting 47% from the field.

During FIBA World Cup Qualifiers, Urbaniak is averaging five points and 2.3 rebounds.

Urbaniak’s reported commitment still leaves BYU with openings on its 2026-27 roster. Earlier in the summer, third-year head coach Kevin Young said that he planned to fill all 15 roster spots for the upcoming season.
