Rob Wright III Shines With Career‑High As No. 22 BYU Wins At Baylor

BYU basketball guard Rob Wright III heard chants of “traitor” in his return to Baylor on Tuesday night in Waco.
The even-keeled sophomore guard didn’t let those chants from Baylor students faze him as he went on to score a career-high 30 points to help BYU end its four-game losing streak to defeat the Bears, 99-94.

AJ Dybantsa scored 36 points on 20 field goal attempts, and Richie Saunders added 15 to give BYU’s Big Three a total of 81 points in the win.
BYU improves to 6-5 in Big 12 play and 18-6 overall.
First Half
Under-16: Baylor 9, BYU 7
Baylor hit three 3-pointers from three different players, leading to BYU head coach Kevin Young calling a timeout.
Under-12: Baylor 24, BYU 19
BYU played well offensively, but they couldn’t get stops. Baylor hit eight consecutive field goals, including two difficult baseline shots from Tounde Yessoufou.
Under-8: Baylor 33, BYU 21
Baylor had a stretch in which they made 11 of their 13 field goal attempts. The only two misses were on one possession.
One of the makes was Tounde Yessoufou getting a friendly bounce on a three-pointer, which led Kevin Young to call a timeout.
Under-4: Baylor 40, BYU 33
BYU began settling into the game on the defensive end. The Cougars forced six Baylor turnovers, which led to 12 points.
AJ Dybantsa and Robert Wright III had a combined 27 of BYU’s 33 points.
Halftime: BYU 41, Baylor 41
BYU closed the first half on an 8-1 run. Baylor didn’t hit a field goal in the final 3:46.
It’s the same halftime score as BYU’s last road game in Big 12 play, at Oklahoma State.
BYU’s “Big Three” of AJ Dybantsa, Richie Saunders, and Robert Wright III accounted for 39 of BYU’s 41 points. Dybantsa led the way with 18, Wright scored 15 and was on attack in the first half, with Saunders chipping in six points.
Second Half
Under-16: BYU 56, Baylor 50
AJ Dybantsa had a highlight-reel slam dunk to get the scoring started for BYU in the second half.
BYU was finding success with a smaller lineup that included Khadim Mboup as the center.
Mboup and Saunders recorded a pair of blocks that led to points, and Saunders recorded a steal that led to a fast-break bucket.
The red-hot Bears in the first half didn’t carry over into the second, going 3-of-7 from the field and 0-for-2 from 3-point range.
Under-12: BYU 65, Baylor 56
Rob Wright was heating up as he eclipsed the 20-point mark. Khadim Mboup made nice contributions on the defensive end, while Keba Keita dealt with foul trouble, picking up four fouls.
Under-8: BYU 77, Baylor 66
AJ Dybantsa reached 30 points, while Rob Wright was up to 25 points to lead BYU to a double-digit lead.
Baylor had cut the deficit down to six after a deep Tounde Yessoufou three, but Dybantsa quickly countered with an and-one.
Under-4: BYU 85, Baylor 73
Kennard “Moo” Davis had a nice moment with an offensive rebound and a putback that led to an and-one opportunity.
Baylor’s Tounde Yessoufou set a new career-high with 31 points.
Final: BYU 99, Baylor 94
Baylor did everything it could to make it interesting, but BYU took care of opportunities at the free-throw line. Most notably, Kennard Davis, who hit six of seven attempts from the charity stripe.
BYU will return home to welcome the Colorado Buffaloes to the Marriott Center on Saturday at 2 p.m. (MST).
