PROVO, Utah – BYU basketball has its first transfer portal entry on the eve of the portal officially opening.

Center Xavion Staton is entering the NCAA Transfer Portal. He shared a post on his personal Instagram and X accounts on Monday night, moments after the National Championship Game, in which Michigan defeated UConn.

Xavion Staton announces he will enter the NCAA Transfer Portal

“I’m incredibly grateful for my time at this University and for everything it has poured into me, on and off the court. This past season has been a year of growth, discipline, and development beyond just basketball. I believe everything happens for a reason, and every step is part of the path I’m meant to walk,” Staton wrote on his social media post.

Staton continued, “I want to sincerely thank my coaches, teammates, and the entire program for pushing me, believing in me, and helping me grow every day. I’m also extremely grateful for my family and their constant love and support.

“To Cougar Nation—thank you for embracing me, supporting me, and showing love throughout this journey. It never went unnoticed. I will always have love for you all.

“With that being said, I will be entering the transfer portal as I take the next step in my career. I’m excited for what’s ahead and fully trusting God in this next chapter.”

Staton was part of the BYU basketball program for one year

Staton was part of the BYU program for one season. He’s a former four-star recruit who was No. 36 overall in the class of 2025 out of Las Vegas, then later Utah Prep, where he was a high school teammate with AJ Dybantsa.

Staton appeared in only nine games during his freshman season with the BYU basketball program. He was sidelined for all of Big 12 play due to knee rehab from a previous injury he dealt with from his high school career.

The 6-foot-11 center was one of the top shot blockers in the class of 2025.

Xavion Staton picked BYU over Michigan, Stanford, and UNLV, coming out of Sierra Vista High School in Las Vegas.

Travis Barnham of 247Sports reports that Xavion Staton is entering the Transfer Portal with a “No Contact” tag, meaning he doesn’t want schools reaching out to him.

One of Staton’s most productive games during his freshman season was against the national runner-up UConn Huskies, where he scored three points in eight minutes of action off the bench.

The NCAA Transfer Portal window this offseason is open from April 7 to April 21. Players do not have to sign with a school during these next two weeks; they just have to declare their intent to enter the portal if they plan to transfer.
