Former BYU football stars Jason Buck, Kyle Van Noy among latest hall-of-fame inductees

PROVO — Five former BYU athletes will join the growing list of hall-of-fame inductions as part of the 2026 class before the Cougars’ home football game Sept. 12 against Arizona.

The latest additions to the BYU athletics hall of fame include former football stars Jason Buck and Kyle Van Noy; women’s soccer and track and field All-American Shauna Rohbock; women’s volleyball standout Amy Boswell Usevitch; and Wally Joyner, who many consider to be the greatest baseball player to ever come through BYU.

The quintet will be honored during an induction banquet Friday, Sept. 11 hosted by the Cougar Club.

Since the inaugural class of 1975, the BYU athletics hall of fame has inducted nearly 250 former athletes, coaches, staff and administrators and 11 teams.

Here’s a look at the latest group.

Jason Buck, football

Buck arrived at BYU as a junior college All-American out of Ricks College and left on the short list of greatest defensive football players in program history.

The Western Athletic Conference defensive player of the year and two-time All-WAC first-team selection from St. Anthony, Idaho, led the Cougars with 33 assisted tackles, 26 solo stops, 13 tackles for loss, 17 quarterback hurries and 12.5 sacks as a senior in 196, when he became the first defensive player from BYU to earn consensus All-America honors and won the Outland Trophy, presented annually to the top interior lineman in college football by the Football Writers Association of America.

Buck went on to the No. 17 overall selection in the 1987 NFL draft by the Cincinnati Bengals and played in 97 games over seven NFL seasons, including 31 starts and a Super Bowl title with the then-Washington Redskins.

Since his retirement, Buck has been involved with several charity organizations, including the American Lung Association, Children’s Miracle Network, Special Olympics and Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Kyle Van Noy, football

Van Noy joins the 2026 hall-of-fame class alongside Buck as one of the most decorated defensive players in BYU football history.

The former star linebacker from Reno, Nevada, earned more than 25 national and independent honors from 2010-2013 and finish his career fifth in program history with 26 sacks.

The second-round selection by the Detroit Lions int he 2014 NFL draft led BYU’s defense to a No. 3 national ranking in total defense as a junior and led the team in tackles for loss in back-to-back seasons as an upperclassman, recording stats in all 10 defensive categories each year.

Van Noy won all-defensive honors from eight different organizations as a senior, including the Associated Press, Walter Camp, Athlon Sports and the College Football Performance Awards defensive player of the year in 2012 — when he was a finalist for the Bronco Nagurski, Lombardi, Chuck Bednarik and Butkus trophies.

Since winning two Super Bowl titles with the New England Patriots in 2017 and 2019, Van Noy and his wife Marissa — the former Miss Utah in 2013 — founded the Van Noy Valor Foundation, dedicated to supporting foster and adopted youth through resources, mentorship and opportunity.

Van Noy has spoken passionately in support of adopted and foster children, including writing a Players’ Tribune essay this past summer where he described learning about his biological parents for the first time when he was 30 years old.

Shauna Rohbock, women’s soccer and track and field

A rare multi-sport athlete at BYU, Rohbock earned All-America status in both soccer and track and field from 1995-98 before playing professionally in the Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA) with the San Diego Spirit.

The Mountain View High alumna earned NSCAA All-America recognition in all four seasons of her college soccer career, when she rewrote the BYU record book for most career goals (95), shots (368) and points (216). As a senior, Rohbock registered 35 goals, 108 shots and 79 points in 23 games, including a second four-goal performance at South Field against Colorado in 1998.

She earned All-America recognition with an eighth-place finish in the heptathlon at the 1997 NCAA outdoor track and field championships, and added a WAC outdoor title in 1998.

After her professional career, Rohbock turned to the bobsled, representing the United States at the 2006 Winter Olympics en route to a silver medal. She’s part of the most decorated U.S. bobsled team in World Cup history, winning more medals than any other pairing from 1999 to 2011.

She continued as a coach of the U.S. men’s and women’s bobsled team sin 2018, 2022 and 2026 while also serving as a member of the Utah Army National Guard and being appointed to the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition in 2020.

In 2019, Rohbock was inducted into the Utah Sports Hall of Fame.

Amy Boswell Usevitch, women’s volleyball

One of the more dominant middle blockers in BYU history, Boswell earned All-American honors three times in her college career from 2012-16, including leading the Cougars to four consecutive NCAA Tournament round-of-16 appearances and the program’s first-ever national championship match in 2014.

The Aloha, Oregon native ranked second nationally with 1.68 blocks per set in 2014 and finished her BYU career with 555 blocks, the seventh-most in program history.

The former West Coast Conference hall-of-fame inductee in 2023 also excelled off the court, receiving the NCAA Elite 89 Award in 2014 while maintaining a 3.92 GPA before graduating with a degree in nursing.

Wally Joyner, baseball

Considered by many to be the greatest baseball player in BYU history, Joyner was named first-team All-America by the American Baseball Coaches Association in 1983 after earning back-to-back all-WAC honors in 1982 and 1983.

The Atlanta native still ranks among the top 10 in program history in several offensive categories, including tied for second with 67 career doubles and third all-time with a .419 career batting average.

During his three seasons with the Cougars, Joyner smacked 205 RBI on 277 hits, stole 479 bases, hit 43 home runs and ranks 10th all-time in slugging percentage with .725.

He was drafted with the No. 67 overall pick (third round) by the California Angels in the 1983 MLB Draft, debuted in The Show in 1986, and became known as “Wally World” when he earned a spot for the American League in the MLB All-Star Game and finished second in the AL Rookie of the Year race.

Joyner also spent time with the Kansas City Royals, San Diego Padres and his hometown Atlanta Braves before returning to Anaheim for the final season of his 16-year MLB career with the Angels. In all, the MLB player of 2,033 games from 19986-2001 finished with a career batting average of .298, and totaled 2,060 hits, 204 home runs and 1,106 RBI with 409 doubles, 26 triples, 833 walks and 973 runs scored.
