SALT LAKE CITY — Harvard-Westlake guard Pierce Thompson has committed to Utah, becoming the first prospect to commit in the program’s 2028 recruiting class.

Thompson is a combo guard whose development includes high school basketball in Southern California playoff and a leading role for Austria’s U18 national team.

The 6-foot-4 guard possesses a combination of perimeter scoring and experience playing different offensive roles to Alex Jensen’s program. His recruitment included offers from Mississippi State, Cal, Loyola Chicago, St. Bonaventure, Yale and Harvard.

Thompson ranks No. 236 nationally, No. 38 among shooting guards and No. 23 in California in the 247Sports Composite. The Rivals Industry ranking places him No. 197 nationally and No. 16 in California, classifying him as the country’s No. 38 point guard.

A leading scorer role for Austria

Thompson possesses another layer on his résumé that is pretty unique. He competed internationally in this summer’s FIBA U18 EuroBasket, leading Austria with 14.4 points per game. He ranked 13th among the tournament’s scorers and averaged 29.1 minutes across seven games.

He played in a seven games, reaching double figures in six of them. That stretch gave him with some experience carrying a substantial scoring workload against international competition.

His next developmental challenge is to make that production more efficient while continuing to build the complementary skills that helped him emerge at Harvard-Westlake.

Pierce Thompson’s development as a combo guard

Thompson’s emergence at Harvard-Westlake has followed a patient developmental path, with his defense and 3-point shooting helping him earn a larger role in the offense. As his responsibilities expanded, so did the recruiting attention, giving Utah a prospect whose appeal extends beyond his ability to make shots.

His offensive strengths suggest a natural fit alongside a primary ballhandler. Thompson has the range to stretch a defense and can contribute as a catch-and-shoot option without needing an offense built around him. That is a useful starting point for a young guard entering college basketball, where finding ways to complement more established scorers can help create an opportunity to play.

The next layer of his game is what happens when a defender takes away the initial shot. Thompson can attack closeouts and use the space created by his shooting threat to get into the lane. Developing that part of his game would make him more difficult to contain, particularly as he becomes more consistent recognizing when to finish, pull up or move the ball to a teammate.

His movement away from the ball adds another dimension. Thompson shows a feel for cutting into open space and finding opportunities within the flow of an offense. Those actions can turn a defender’s attention toward the ball into an opening near the basket, allowing him to remain involved even when another player is initiating the possession.

Taken together, those traits give him a foundation as a complementary scorer, with room to grow into greater responsibility. The progression will depend on how consistently his shooting translates against college defenders and how effectively he makes decisions when those defenders force him to put the ball on the floor.

For Utah, the potential value is in that combination of shooting, movement and offensive adaptability. Thompson could provide spacing for a lead guard, capitalize on the advantages a teammate creates and keep possessions moving. As his strength, efficiency and ability to create his own shot develop, the Utes can explore whether his role grows beyond those initial responsibilities.
