SALT LAKE CITY — Utah football will get a game under its belt before a historic first meeting with Miami.
The Utes and Hurricanes will meet for the first time on Sept. 4, 2027, in the Vegas Kickoff Classic at Allegiant Stadium. The neutral-site matchup brings together programs from the Big 12 and ACC for a Labor Day weekend showcase.
Utah announced Friday that its home game against Southern Utah has moved from Sept. 25 to Thursday, Aug. 26 at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Originally scheduled to open against Miami, the Utes will now face the Thunderbirds first before traveling to Las Vegas. Utah will host Wyoming on Sept. 11 to finish its nonconference schedule.
The change gives Utah a chance to knock off some rust, get new starters settled in and clean up mistakes before facing the Hurricanes. And don’t be surprised to see the Hurricanes announce a similar tune-up game.

A chance to sharpen up before Miami
Facing Southern Utah gives Utah a chance to work through opening-game mistakes before heading to Las Vegas.
The staff can evaluate protection calls, run fits, tackling and substitutions against another opponent. New starters can settle into their roles, while backups get a chance to earn more snaps.
The Thursday opener also leaves nine days between games, two more than a normal Saturday-to-Saturday turnaround. That gives Utah additional time to recover, review the film and clean up missed assignments before facing Miami.
Ideally, the Utes would establish a rhythm on offense, get their defense off the field and give their rotation valuable work without overloading the starters. Executing their base schemes would also allow them to keep a few wrinkles available for the Hurricanes, who will have fresh Utah film to study.
Utah is 3-0 against Southern Utah, most recently winning 49-0 in the 2024 opener. Another comfortable win would be welcome, but the bigger benefit would be leaving the game healthy, with useful reps and a clear picture of what needs fixing before Miami.

Miami has returned to the national picture
Miami’s recent history gives significant national weight to the matchup.
Under Mario Cristobal, the Hurricanes followed a 10-3 season in 2024 with a 13-3 finish and a national championship game appearance in the 2025 season. Miami won three playoff games before falling 27-21 to Indiana in the title game in January 2026.
The Hurricanes have carried that momentum into 2026, opening 4-0 ahead of their Oct. 3 trip to Clemson.
There is still plenty of football to play before the teams meet in 2027, and both rosters will change. But Miami’s recent success makes the game an opportunity for Utah to measure itself against a program that has worked its way back into national title contention.
Getting an opener and an extended turnaround beforehand gives the Utes a useful chance to sharpen their execution before that test.
