SALT LAKE CITY – It’s not every day that a goalie tries to make light of being scored against, but that’s precisely what St. Louis Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington did after becoming Alex Ovechkin‘s latest victim.
After allowing Ovechkin to become the first 900-goal scorer in NHL history, Binnington collected the puck and tried hiding it in his padding. He would have gotten away with it, too, if not for those meddling refs.

Seconds later, one of the officials skated over and asked Binnington to return the historic puck.
Ovechkin is only the third player in league history to reach the 800-goal plateau. He passed Wayne Gretzky (894) for the all-time goals lead late last season.
It is common for players, or, in this case, likely the Hall of Fame, to retain a puck from memorable moments on the ice.
The No. 1 overall pick of the Washington Capitals in 2004, Ovechkin has etched his name in the conversation of one of the greatest scorers the league has ever seen.
He scored 56 goals as a rookie in 2005-06, finishing the season with 106 points. Two years later, Ovechkin found the back of the net 65 times to lead the league. He also led the NHL with 112 points for the first time in his career.

In his 21 seasons, the Russian-born skater has scored 50 or goals nine times, and finished with more than 100 points four times. He is currently tenth all-time with 1,630 points.
A 12-time all-star, Ovechkin helped lead the Capitals to the 2018 Stanley Cup title in a crowning achievement for his storied career.
Along with being the all-time goals leader, Ovechkin has a bevy of league records. Among them, his nine goal-scoring titles are the most in NHL history. He holds the record for most 30-goal seasons (18), 40-goal seasons (14), and 50-goal seasons (nine).
