LOS ANGELES, California – The Utah Mammoth came firing out of the blocks, taking an early lead and adding insurance in a 6-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings.

Logan Cooley (19, 20) and Alexander Kerfoot (4, 5) each scored twice. Nick Schmaltz and an empty-netter from Jack McBain helped lift Utah to the type of win that can define a team with the postseason approaching.
It took less than three minutes for the Mammoth to strike after starting the game with an extra edge.
Before most of the Los Angeles crowd had found their seats, John Marino received a pass from Alexander Kerfoot near the center circle.

Marino whipped a shot toward the net as the Kings’ defenders converged. Kerfoot skated right through the traffic and got a piece of the puck, deflecting it past Darcy Kuemper for a 1-0 lead.
It was the fourth goal of the season for Kerfoot and the 29th assist for Marino.
The mind-boggling speed of Utah’s Logan Cooley showed up yet again as the Mammoth doubled its first-period lead.
Defenseman Mikhail Sergachev took control of the puck and spotted Cooley, flying down the ice with nobody but Kuemper between him and a goal.

Sergachev’s veteran intelligence allowed him to fire a pass off the end boards that redirected to his teammate streaking toward the net.
Cooley then deftly finished the play by beating Kuemper stick-side.
Los Angeles answered Cooley’s sprint exhibition with an Anze Kopitar goal moments later, but the young Utah forward wasn’t finished.

Recently inserted into Utah’s power play unit in hopes of rejuvenating a struggling group, Cooley scored his second goal of the day off a pass from Clayton Keller.
The middle 20 minutes weren’t quite as productive for the Mammoth as they attempted only four shots. The lack of shots didn’t seem to impact the scoreboard, with Kerfoot and Nick Schmaltz each scoring to make it 5-1 Utah after 40 minutes.
Kerfoot’s second goal of the night came late in the period, immediately following a Mammoth penalty kill.

Ian Cole picked up his 18th assist on the play.
Three minutes later, the 27th goal of the year for Nick Schmaltz continued the onslaught.

The Mammoth turns the page on March when they face the Seattle Kraken on Thursday, April 2. The puck drops at 8 p.m. MT.
