SALT LAKE CITY — The Prince of Pittsburgh stole the show in his hometown on Thursday night, leading the Utah Mammoth to a thrilling victory in overtime over the Penguins with his fourth career hat-trick.

Logan Cooley hometown hat-trick wills Utah Mammoth to two points in Pittsburgh

Words cannot accurately describe the finish we witnessed in Pittsburgh tonight, but the two words that defined Utah’s victory were: Logan Cooley.

A native of Steel City, Cooley was a cheat code in front of his entire family as he single handedly willed the Mammoth to overtime with a hat-trick.

“It means everything,” Logan Cooley said in regard to playing in front of his family. “Just growing up here, having the support of my family, and everything they sacrificed.”

“It truly means everything. Without them, I’m not here.”

Throughout the night, 92 put on a show in his hometown as he dominated every inch of ice.

Utilizing his speed, Cooley was a constant offensive zone threat as he consistently dangled through the defense, attacked the net relentlessly and somehow managed to bat the puck out of the air just before the final buzzer sounded to force overtime.

“He had this inner Connor McDavid in him today, Logan,” Mikhail Sergachev said. “Cools played unbelievable. He was flying up the ice, down the ice, defending. He had it all tonight. Good for him.”

“He’s one of our top players. He’s supposed to be doing that. He’s going to show everyone what kind of player he is…he does everything right. When he puts it all together, he’s what he is tonight.”

Logan Cooley is a special player.

Not just because of his speed, hockey IQ, or jaw-dropping dangles, but because of his ability to be the best player on the ice regardless of the matchup.

The key for both Cooley and the long-term success of the Mammoth will be his ability to perform at that level as consistently as possible.

If he can do that, Cooley has the potential to become the driving force behind Utah’s pursuit of Stanley Cups and establish himself as one of the NHL’s elite players.

A quick word on Sebastian Cossa

While Cooley stole the show and Mikhail Sergachev delivered the knockout punch in Utah’s 4-3 OT victory over the Penguins, Utah would not have even reached that point without a stellar performance between the pipes from Sebastian Cossa.

Before ending the night with 31 stops on 34 shots (.912 save percentage), Cossa was composed right from the initial puck drop as he stopped tremendous waves of offense from the Penguins all night.

Notably, Cossa’s biggest save of the night came against the legendary Sidney Crosby as he robbed 87 of a Grade A scoring chance by leaping across his crease to slam the door shut with his blocker.

“He was in the right spot all the time,” Sergachev said of Cossa. “Not giving up rebounds. Just covering the puck or playing the puck behind the net.”

“It gives you a lot of confidence when your goalie starts a game like that.”

This is the Sebastian Cossa Utah envisioned when they traded a first-round pick to acquire him this past summer.

Confident, calm, composed, and quick to react when the team is in desperate need of a big save.

For a young goaltender looking to find his way in the NHL, a performance like that could prove to be a major building block.
