USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships: Park City’s Grant Fisher adds 10K runner-up to resume

NEW YORK CITY — Grant Fisher was neck-and-neck with two-time Olympian Woody Kincaid before the three-time national champion emerged from a three-man group in the final lap of a 25-lap race to win the 10,000-meter title Thursday at the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships at Icahn Stadium.

Fisher finished eight-tenths behind Kincaid’s winning time of 30 minutes, 13.66 seconds. Drew Bosley was third in 30:20.60.

It’s Kincaid’s third national title after winning the 10,000-meter title at the Tokyo Olympic trials and again at nationals in 2023. Fisher — who was born in Calgary, Alberta, before moving to Grand Blanc, Michigan, as a child and running collegiately at Stanford prior to a pro career that included 10,000-meter bronze at the Paris Olympics in 2024— adds another 10K silver medal to the one he earned at outdoor nationals in 2022, when he finished second to Joe Klecker’s 28:28.80.

Fisher said he “did not feel good” when he tried to move the pace early,

“I felt like I still had something left in the tank with a lap to go,” Fisher told LetsRun.com in the post-race mixed zone. “Woody just had more.

“Maybe I went too early, maybe I didn’t have the legs today,” he added. “But it wasn’t what I wanted.”

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the American national championships, which were first held in 1976 in New York City.

“It’s nice to know that finish is still there, that kick is still there, and I think it’s still deadly,” said Kincaid, per NBC Sports.

For other track and field athletes who live and train in Utah, it was something of a mixed bag.

Former BYU collegiate champion steeplechaser Kenneth Rooks failed to advance to the finals of the 3,000-meter event Thursday night, finishing 11th in his heat and 20th overall in 8:46.26.

The three-time defending national champion and Olympic silver medalist watched as his training partners, BYU’s James Corrigan and Dan Michalski, both advanced to the finals with times of 8:32.20 and 8:24.89, respectively.

Utah State’s Logan Garnica finished just ahead of Rooks by time in 8:45.42, but also missed qualification. Former Weber State harrier Peter Visser posted a personal-best 8:35.09, but failed to advance to the finals.

BYU’s Carlee Hansen-Thompson, the former Woods Cross standout who recently wrapped up her senior season with the Cougars and now runs professionally for Nike’s Swoosh TC, set a personal-best time of 4:04.54 in the 1,500 meter to advance to the finals. Fellow BYU alum Sadie Sargent, the North Summit grad who is married to BYU football center Bruce Mitchell, failed to advance in 4:16.67.

Hansen-Thompson will line up in Saturday’s final at 3:40 p.m. MT.

Former BYU sprinter Jaslyn Gardner and school-record holder Paje Rasmussen each advanced to the Friday’s semifinals in the 100- and 200-meter dash, respectively.

Just days removed from signing a significant name, image and likeness deal with Hoka, BYU’s Carter Cutting advanced to the 1,500-meter men’s final in 3:41.59, the third-fastest time of the day for the Cougars’ current school-record holder.

The national championships continued Friday, including the men’s and women’s 100-meter semifinals at 4:11 p.m. MT on NBC Sports Network and Peacock.
