EUGENE, Ore. – The 10th-ranked Utah Utes turned the ball over three times and turned the ball over on downs multiple times in their 20-17 loss to No. 12 Oregon.

Both Utah and Oregon had over 300 yards of total offense but only 37 combined points were scored. Each team turned the ball over three times but Utah’s miscues hurt down the stretch.

Cam Rising threw three interceptions, the offense turned the ball over on downs three times, and had one missed field goal.

Pregame

First Quarter

Oregon got things started with a 10-yard rushing touchdown by Bucky Irving. That gave the Ducks a 7-0 lead with 10:56 remaining in the opening quarter.

Utah got into field goal range off of big plays from Dalton Kincaid. Unfortunately for the Utes, Jadon Redding missed a 38-yard field goal attempt. The Ducks were forced to punt on their next drive. Utah once again got in field goal range. Redding redeemed himself by making a 45-yard field goal. Oregon held a 7-3 lead with 1:09 remaining in the first quarter.

Second Quarter

The start of the second quarter was interesting. Oregon fumbled the ball after Zemaiah Vaughn ripped the ball out of the receiver’s hands. Cole Bishop recovered the fumble.

On Utah’s first offensive play following the takeaway, the Ducks deflected Rising’s pass at the line of scrimmage and Oregon intercepted the pass. The Ducks answered with a four-yard touchdown pass from Bo Nix to Troy Franking to give Oregon a 14-3 lead with 10:28 remaining in the first half.

Utah turned the ball over on downs in the red zone. Oregon was able to get a 30-yard field goal to give the Ducks a 17-3 lead at the halftime break.

Third Quarter

With Oregon holding a 17-3 lead, the Ducks attempted a trick play with backup Ty Thompson in at quarterback. When Thompson went to hand the ball off, the exchange wasn’t clean and Karene Reid scooped up the ball and ran in the 11-yard touchdown.

That play cut Oregon’s lead to 17-10 with 13:14 remaining in the third quarter.

With Utah in the red zone, Andy Ludwig dialed up a jet sweep that sent Jaylen Dixon into the end zone from 18-yards out to tie the game at 17 with 2:39 remaining in the third quarter.

That was Dixon’s first rushing attempt of the game. He also had one reception for 13 yards. It’s the fourth rushing touchdown of the season for Dixon.

Fourth Quarter

The only points scored in the fourth quarter was a 41-yard field goal by Oregon with 11:17 remaining in the game to give the Ducks a 20-17 lead. Utah did have multiple chances to take the lead late but couldn’t get it done.

The Utes dropped their record to 8-3 overall and 6-2 in Pac-12 play. They will wrap up the regular season against Colorado in Boulder on Saturday, November 26. Kickoff time and broadcast information will be announced on Sunday.
