SALT LAKE CITY- With the NCAA Transfer Portal window for football opening December 5, 2022, it’s that time of year where we start seeing players coming in and out of programs and Utah football will be no exception in 2023.

Expect a slow ramp-up to Utah’s transfer portal season with the Utes preparing to play in their second Rose Bowl in two years. While most of the team will want to see things out through January 2, 2023 (the transfer portal window doesn’t close till January 18, 2023), a few will see the writing on the wall and want to get a jump start.

It is mostly expected the players entering the portal over the next few weeks for the Utes will be guys who have seen limited to no playing time over the years due to Utah’s growing depth. Others will simply be looking for a fresh start or change of scenery after putting in their time to get their degrees.

However, tampering with the new NIL rules remains a legitimate concern and could potentially bring about some surprising transfers though nothing of that sort has happened yet. Still, it is something to watch and be wary of as the 2023 Transfer Portal Cycle ramps up in the coming weeks.

KSL Sports will keep a live Utah football tracker for the 2023 cycle throughout the next six weeks so you can see who comes and goes from the Utes as it happens.

Where Did Former Utes Land?

(As of 4/17/23)

In a twist of fate, Micah Bernard pulled his name out of the NCAA Transfer Portal and will finish his career as a Ute after testing the waters with the likes of Colorado and South Carolina.

Defensive back Malone Mataele, linebacker Mason Tufaga, defensive end Tyler Wegis and offensive lineman Paul Maile recently found new homes since entering the transfer portal.

Mataele will be a few miles north up the road from the Utes finishing up his career with Utah State.

Tufaga will be calling Corvallis home and facing his old team this coming season with the Oregon State Beavers.

Wegis on the other hand just crossed the border to Idaho where he will be playing for Boise State on the “Smurf Turf”.

Paul Maile wasn’t in the Transfer Portal long and found a new home just 45 minutes down the road with BYU. Maile was a solid contributor for the Utes and will surely have an immediate impact for the Cougars as they go about getting their roster upgraded for their first year in the Big 12.

Landon Morris will be much further away than some of the others after finding a landing spot with Temple football. Ethan Calvert also has a new home with Cal Poly.

Safety Clayton Isbell will now be playing for Coastal Carolina.

Who has Utah picked up commitments from in the portal?
