SALT LAKE CITY – Former Utah Jazz head coach Quin Snyder reached an agreement to become the next head coach of the Atlanta Hawks.

The Hawks officially announced the hire of Snyder on Sunday, February 26.

Snyder will return to the sidelines less than a year after resigning at Utah’s head coach. The former Jazz coach will lead the Hawks for the rest of the current NBA season as well.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that is was a five-year contract that Snyder signed with Atlanta.

“ESPN Sources: Quin Snyder has reached agreement on a five-year deal — including the rest of this season — to become coach of the Atlanta Hawks. Snyder is expected to be on sidelines as soon as Tuesday vs. Washington,” Wojnarowski tweeted.

Two days before Wojnarowski’s report, The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported that the position had been offered to Snyder less than a week after Atlanta fired Nate McMillan as the organization’s head coach.

“The Atlanta Hawks have offered their head coaching job to former Utah Jazz coach Quin Snyder and both sides are working toward a deal, sources say,” Charania tweeted.

Early on February 24, Wojnarowski reported that the two sides were “progressing in talks on a deal.”

“ESPN Sources: Quin Snyder and Atlanta Hawks are progressing in talks on deal to make him franchise’s next coach and a resolution could come within days. Snyder is full focus of Hawks’ search now and sides are deep in conversations on what a vision for future looks like together,” Wojnarowski tweeted. “Snyder has been discussing philosophy and organization-building with GM Landry Fields, assistant GM Kyle Korver and owner Tony Ressler in recent days, conversations giving both sides a chance to fully think through how a partnership together would work, sources said.”

Snyder previously served as an assistant coach for the Hawks from 2013-14, a post he held when accepting the Jazz’s head coaching job in 2014.

Korver played for Snyder in Utah from 2018-19. The former Jazzman also played for Snyder as a member of the Hawks. Korver played in Atlanta from 2012-17.

Earlier in the week, the Hawks fired Nate McMillan as their head coach.

In June 2022, Snyder announced that he was stepping down as head coach of the Jazz following eight seasons with the organization.

Snyder had been the Jazz head coach since he replaced Tyrone Corbin in 2014.

After Snyder’s departure, the Jazz hired Will Hardy as head coach.

Snyder is Utah’s second-winningest coach all-time and he trails only Hall of Famer Jerry Sloan for career wins with the Jazz.

“Quin Snyder has embodied what Jazz basketball is for the last eight years,” Jazz owner Ryan Smith said in a statement after Snyder’s decision in 2022. “The tireless work ethic and attention to detail Quin displayed each day is a testament to the professional he is. I have nothing but admiration for Quin and respect his decision. On behalf of Ashley and I along with our ownership group and our entire organization, we thank Quin and Amy from the bottom of our hearts for all of their contributions to the state of Utah and the Jazz and wish them nothing but the best.”

The former Duke point guard has a coaching record of 372-264 with three opening-round playoff series wins. In Snyder’s final season in Utah, the Jazz finished with the fifth seed in the Western Conference with a record of 49-33.

“I am incredibly grateful to have spent the last eight years with such a respected and historic organization and in the beautiful, kind, supportive community of Salt Lake City. I could not have asked for better owners in the Miller family and with Ryan and Ashley,” Snyder said on leaving the Jazz.

“They represent the Utah Jazz in every good way and I know the team couldn’t be in better hands with Ryan’s ownership. He is fiercely proud of and committed to doing what is right for the Utah Jazz and bringing a championship to Utah. It has also been an honor working with the entire ownership group, Mike, Ryan, Dwyane and others. Danny and Justin are providing strong leadership and I greatly appreciate their efforts and working with them.  At the core, and what drives me every day is our players and their passion for the game, their desire to constantly work to improve and their dedication to the team and the Jazz. I strongly feel they need a new voice to continue to evolve. That’s it. No philosophical differences, no other reason.”

“After eight years, I just feel it is time to move onward. I needed to take time to detach after the season and make sure this was the right decision. I greatly respect and appreciate Ryan, Danny and Justin’s discussions regarding moving forward together, I just know it is time. I am forever appreciative of all the players, coaches, partners, and people I have worked with at the Jazz. Your sacrifice, your kinship have made this an incredible and special experience. Amy and I are so grateful for our time here as it has been just a tremendous place to raise our family. Thank you to our always supportive and passionate fans. We only want the best for you and to see you raise a championship banner.”

Snyder’s Coaching History

After a prolific four-year career as a player at Duke, Snyder tested the NBA waters as a player for the Indiana Pacers but opted against a professional career.

While pursuing a graduate degree at Duke, Snyder served as an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Clippers for a season, before joining Mike Krzyzewski’s staff with the Blue Devils.

Snyder was with Duke for six seasons before accepting the head coaching position at the University of Missouri, which he held until 2006.

After Missouri, Snyder spent three seasons coaching the Austin Toros, then single seasons as an assistant for the Philadelphia 76ers, the Lakers, CKSA Moscow, and the Atlanta Hawks before being hired by the Jazz.
