Gabe Madsen Leads Utah Basketball To 94-48 Win Over Mississippi Valley

SALT LAKE CITY – Utah opened the Mountain to Sea Showcase with a 94-48 win over Mississippi Valley. The Utes controlled this one from beginning to end and played efficient basketball on both ends of the floor.
Gabe Madsen led the Utes with 27 points on 10-of-13 shooting, 7-of-10 from 3-point range.

The Utes enjoyed a strong offensive outing, but the defense was truly stingy during the stretches of the game. Utah enjoyed having their two bigs back, it made a considerable difference on that side of the ball.
Utah finished the game converting 56% of their shots from the field, 48% from 3-point range, and 70% from the free throw line. They limited MSVU to just 34% shooting and forced 15 turnovers.
Starting Lineup
For the first time this season, the Utes were at full strength. The starting lineup included Miro Little, Gabe Madsen, Mike Sharavjamts, Ezra Ausar, and Lawson Lovering.
In fact, Lovering and Zach Keller both made their debuts tonight.
MVSU vs Utah First Half
It was only right that Utah started the game with a Lawson Lovering dunk. He had an open lane off a pick-n-roll with Gabe Madsen and threw down an easy one.
Miro Little got it going defensively with a steal, which led to Mike Sharavjamts’s assisted layup in transition.
Later, Lovering then had another easy one at the rim. He then assisted Ezra Ausar with a gimme at the rim, as his defender helped on Lovering.
After that, Gabe Madsen took over and scored the next 8 points with two 3-point makes and an uncontested jumper at the free throw line.
That made it 16-8 at the first official timeout of the game.

Following the first official timeout, Utah and MSVU had a couple of scoreless minutes, but Utah defended well.
Utah had a couple of opportunities but could not convert. However, Dawes was fouled at the rim just before the next media break.

After the break, Dawes made both free throws. Utah had been shooting well up to this point, but they really got going after this second media timeout.
Little knocked down a three from the left wing, then went back-to-back from the same spot on the next possession. Ausar was fouled at the rim and knocked down both free throws.
Then G. Madsen had a nice drive and finished at the rim through contact but missed the and-1 layup before the next official timeout.

Lovering worked his way through traffic for another dunk. Meanwhile, he continued to give MVSU trouble on the defensive end with his size.
G. Madsen had two 3-point makes within four possessions. A few possessions later, Wahlin knocked down a three from the top.
After holding MVSU scoreless for nearly nine minutes, the Utah defense got a little loose, and MVSU took advantage.
The Delta Devils scored 11 points in roughly three minutes before the final media timeout, making it 39-19 at the final media break of the half.

After the final break, Utah locked in defensive to finish the half. The only points were two free throws with 30 seconds left in the half.
Meanwhile, Lovering scored six-straight points with a free throw, a little jump hook in semi-transition, then another layup and the free throw.
Little added a pull up jumper in the paint to finish what was perhaps the most aggressive half of scoring we’ve seen of him so far.
G. Madsen added the exclamation point on the half with another 3-point make to send it to the locker room 50-21.
MVSU vs Utah Second Half
Ausar got things started offensively by drawing a foul at the rim and getting to the free-throw line. He made 1-of-2, missing the second, but Lovering was able to grab the rebound, who then dished it to Ausar diving to the rim for a layup.
G. Madsen kept the shooting going, knocking down a contested jumper in the short corner. He then got a steal, pushed it the other,, and lobbed one up to Sharavjamts, who finished at the rim.
After a strong start to the half, Utah got a little sloppy with turnovers. They got to the first media timeout of the second half up 57-25

G. Madsen missed one deep after the break, then proceeded to knock down back-t0-back, all of which came from the top.
M. Madsen then got in on the action and knocked down one from the top to make it nine-straight Madsen points.
Utah got to the second media timeout up 66-28.

After the second media timeout of the half, Erickson found himself open and knocked down a three from the left wing.
A couple of possessions later, he caught it on the left wing again. This time, he jab-stepped to the top, drove baseline, and threw down a monster dunk.
After a couple of empty possessions, M. Madsen knocked down another 3-pointer. Ausar then knocked down a jumper in the paint. After a steal and ball movement in transition, Little was fouled at the rim and the game hit the third media timeout.

Little knocked down both free throws after the break. Utah got a defensive stop and took it the other way. Sharavjamts missed a three from the left side, but Dawes hauled in the offensive rebound and was fouled going back up; he knocked down both free throws to make it 80-35.
Little then knocked down a jumper late in the clock, plus the harm and then sank his free throw. M. Madsen knocked down another three from the left wing on the ensuing possession. Little again had a bucket plus the harm and knocked down the free throw.
Dawes then finished a big dunk in traffic off a Jerry Huang assist. That made it 91-39 at the final media timeout.

Keller scored his bucket as a Ute with :43 seconds left in the game, which was met with a round of applause by the fans. He was also fouled on the bucket and knocked down the free throw.
That was the final bucket of the game for Utah, they won 94-48.
