SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – It’s going to be a busy and fun day on the hill at Rice-Eccles Stadium Friday for the 6A, 5A and 4A state championship games.

4A State Championship: Dixie (11-1) vs. Orem (11-2)

The action will kick off at 11 a.m. as Dixie and Orem will meet for the 4A title.

It will be a battle of contrasting styles as the Flyers boost a terrific defense while Orem has one of the strongest offenses in the state.

The stingy Dixie defense abides just 12.2 points per game but they’ll face their toughest test of the season against Orem’s Cooper Legas, who has the second-most total yards in the entire country.

6A State Championship: American Fork (11-2) vs. Lone Peak (9-3)

Crosstown rivals American Fork and Lone Peak will meet Friday at 2:30 at Rice-Eccles Stadium for the 6A state championship.

The two teams met earlier this season on Sept. 21, and the Cavemen came away with a 51-21 victory at home. In that game, quarterback Boone Abbott threw for 297 yards and two touchdowns. His BYU-bound receiver, Chase Roberts, hauled in 137 yards and a touchdown in the victory.

Despite having an edge with a win already in the books over their opponent, Abbott remained respectful when talking about Lone Peak to the Deseret News.

“They’re a lot better. Obviously they’re one of the best teams in the state, for sure,” said Abbott. “If we come out like how we’ve prepared and we do what we do,” he added, “I think we can get them for sure.”

Lone Peak made it to the championship game by rolling past Pleasant Grove 29-0 last Thursday. The Knights’ roster is highlighted by junior Nate Ritchie, who plays multiple positions. They also boost the state’s best pass rusher in Michael Daley.

5A State Championship: Skyridge (11-1) vs. Corner Canyon (11-0)

Skyridge and Corner Canyon met in the state semifinals last season with the Falcons winning a dramatic 34-33 decision. This time around, the two teams are meeting all the marbles Friday at 6:30 p.m.

The evening’s final game pits two of not only 5A’s strongest teams, but arguably two of the strongest teams in the state, period.

Undefeated Corner Canyon has had a couple of close calls, including last Saturday’s 20-15 win over Olympus, but has also absolutely crushed several opponents, including a 70-3 clubbing of Murray in the first round of the playoffs and a 52-6 trouncing of Viewmont in the second round.

Skyridge dropped its first game of the season to Riverton, but has since racked up some big wins, including a dramatic 24-21 victory over 6A foe and fellow state finalist Lone Peak. The Falcons advanced to Friday’s championship game by dispatching Roy 42-15.

All games will be broadcast live on KJZZ.
