Corner Canyon Grabs First Ever 5A State Title With Win Over Skyridge

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – After a slow first half for both teams, Corner Canyon turned it on in the third quarter to pull away from Skyridge and capture the state 5A crown with a 31-14 victory.

Quarterback Cole Hagen threw for all four of the Chargers’ touchdowns, including two to wide receiver Noah Kjar. Hagen’s final touchdown to Kjar capped off a 98-yard touchdown drive to put the game on ice.

Although both teams are new to the state, it was Corner Canyon, in just its sixth year of existence that capped off a perfect season with the win at Rice-Eccles Stadium. The Chargers rolled to the title with a 70-3 blowout win over Murray in the first round, another 52-6 rout against Viewmont in the second round and then a close 20-15 call against Olympus in the semifinals. For Skyridge, it was another year of falling just short of the title. The Falcons lost to Lehi last season in the championship game, having beaten Corner Canyon in the semifinals to get there.

Head coach Eric Kjar was ecstatic to be celebrating the championship with his team.

“I love it,” said Kjar. “I love these kids. I couldn’t be more proud of them. It’s been a lot of work.”
