Former Utah QB Alex Smith Dealing With Infection After Multiple Surgeries

LANDOVER, Md. – According to multiple reports, former Utah and current Washington Redskins quarterback Alex Smith is dealing with an infection caused by complications from multiple surgeries on his broken leg.

ESPN’s Dianna Russini reports that there is a concern that the 34-year old quarterback in dealing with a career-ending injury after breaking his tibia and fibula in his right leg during the Redskins 23-21 loss to the Houston Texans on November 18.

Smith is still in the hospital where he has been since suffering the injury. He has received support from all of his teammates as Redskins players visited Smith in the hospital last week.

“I’ll continue to pray for him. We had the opportunity to see him last week. We all just [assured] him we’re praying for you, man, and wishing the best for him. That’s all we can do,” running back Adrian Peterson said.

The Redskins released a statement addressing Smith’s health and has requested privacy for Smith and his family.

“On behalf of Alex Smith, we appreciate all of the concerns and prayers over the injury he incurred on November 18th against the Houston Texans,” the statement said. “Although this is a serious injury, Alex and his family remain strong. We would ask that everyone please honor the Smith family’s request for privacy at this time.”

Smith suffered the exact same injury on the same day with the same final score as quarterback legend Joe Theisman 33 years ago.
