PARIS, France – The United States Women’s National Team took down Chile 3-0 in the second game of Group F play and have been absolutely dominate in their first two matches of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Carli Lloyd started the match with a goal in the 11th minute. She set a World Cup record for most consecutive matches scoring a goal with six.

Julie Ertz added the second goal in the 26th minute with a brilliant header in the box.

Lloyd notched a brace in the 35th minute to score the final goal of the match for the United States.

Dominant All-Around Soccer

The U.S. have been very aggressive on the attack, while providing a stifling defense, playing all-around soccer. Through their first two matches of the World Cup, including a 13-0 win over Thailand earlier in the week and their win over Chile, the United States have outscored their two opponents 16-0, outshot them 65-3 and have 25 corner kicks and have allowed just one in two games.

During Sunday’s match with Chile, the U.S. had 26 total shots with 14 on-target. Chile had just one total shot and it was off-target. They had 15 corner kicks and held Chile to just one. Possession was dominated by the U.S. with 68 percent to the Americans and just 32 percent to Chile. They had 84 percent pass accuracy and completed 475 passes. Chile had 67 percent passing accuracy and only 147 passes completed.

Utah Royals Well Represented

Royals forward Christen Press started on the left wing for the United States against Chile and had two near goals that were saved by Chile’s fantastic goalkeeper Christine Endler. Press’ first legitimate came in the 58th minute on a fantastic one-time shot on a cross. The shot was saved by Endler. The Chilean keeper had another great save on a point-blank header by Press.

Press came off the bench in the first game against Thailand and collected an assist.

Defender Becky Sauerbrunn started at centerback for the U.S. and was a key part of the stifling defense for the Americans. She didn’t play against Thailand as they held her out as a precaution to a pre-existing injury.

Kelley O’Hara started against Thailand and notched an assist but did not play against Chile. She was an available substitute but did not get into the match.

The United States have guaranteed a spot in the knockout stage of the World Cup but will face Sweden to wrap up Group F play. Sweden beat Chile 2-0 in their first World Cup match and posted a 4-0 win over Thailand.

The only way that Sweden will win the group is if they beat the United States on Thursday at 1 p.m. on FOX. The tiebreaker is goal differential, which the Americans hold a +16 differential, compared to Sweden’s +6.
