New BYU Throwback Uniform Honors Football Team History

PROVO, Utah – BYU Football is going to get in on the alternate uniform fun this weekend against the No. 22 Washington Huskies.
The Cougars unveiled their new alternate uniform on Tuesday and they’ll be wearing the new threads on Saturday for the Cougars annual “white-out” game.
BYU’s new jersey is a tribute to the 150 years of college football according to BYU’s Director of licensing and trademarks Adam Parker.

Icy! The new white jersey with royal blue numbers is a throwback jersey. The Cougars last wore this jersey in the 1990s. BYU has worn a royal blue jersey with white numbers in this design on numerous occasions since they brought it back into their rotation in 2009.
The helmet is a new alternate lid that the Cougars have not worn before. According to Parker, the block Y on this helmet is the school’s original block Y from the 1960s. The block Y is featured on both sides of the helmet and is the inverse colors of a helmet that BYU wore from 1969-1977.

There’s a single stripe that goes down the middle of the helmet which according to Parker is a tribute to the Marion Probert era. Probert, who played at BYU from 1952-1954, is one of nine former Cougar football athletes that have had their jersey retired at BYU.
The helmets that Probert wore in the 1950s featured a single-stripe down the middle.

This alternate helmet is the Cougars eighth since 2009 and the jersey is the third to be unveiled in the past decade.
The white jersey with royal blue numbers and the pants will now be in BYU’s rotation of uniforms going forward. The helmet will be only worn this Saturday against the Huskies.
The historical tributes to previous iterations of the Cougars uniforms don’t stop with the helmet and jersey. The socks in BYU’s new uniform are also a tribute to past Cougar teams. The Gifford Nielsen era in the mid-1970s wore the socks that the Cougars will wear against the nationally-ranked Huskies on Saturday.

Throwback Field Design
Officials from the athletic department also announced a special field scheme at LaVell Edwards Stadium for Saturday’s game.
The retro design will include the diamond pattern in both end zones used during the 1960s. At midfield, a throwback white helmet with royal blue block “Y” will replace the current “oval Y.”
