PROVO, Utah – BYU’s quarterback room is filled with talented players. Those talented players are battling injuries right now, including redshirt freshman Baylor Romney.

Romney stepped in for the injured Jaren Hall in the second half of BYU’s win against Utah State last Saturday.

At times during the second half against the Aggies, Romney was seen limping on occasion during BYU’s rivalry win over the Aggies because of a foot injury he suffered weeks ago.

Romney is currently competing in practices to be the starting quarterback this week for BYU when they take on Liberty this Saturday.

BYU offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes shared an update on Romney’s progress with the foot injury on Wednesday after practice.

“Improving. Getting better. Not 100-percent yet. But he’s moving in the right direction,” said Grimes.

When asked if Romney’s foot injury would limit his availability for Saturday against the Flames, Grimes said, “I don’t think it will affect his availability.”

In three game appearances this season, Romney has thrown for 485 passing yards and four touchdown passes to only one interception.

Romney has started only one game in his BYU career and it was a win against a Top-25 team in the Boise State Broncos back on October 19th.

No announcement on who will start at QB

Grimes also stated that he had no announcement on who would start at quarterback for BYU against Liberty. This is the third consecutive game for BYU where there has been buildup and intrigue surrounding who will start for the Cougars at quarterback.

This week’s depth chart featured Romney, Jaren Hall, and Zach Wilson as the starters at quarterback with or’s next to each one of their names. Sophomore Joe Critchlow, who was listed as the fourth-string QB on the depth chart, has been getting reps in practice according to Grimes.

Wilson is recovering from a thumb injury he suffered back on September 28th and Hall is recovering from a concussion that sidelined him a week ago against Utah State.
