BYU VP Overseeing Athletics Called As Latter-day Saint Mission President

PROVO, Utah – Matthew O. Richardson, the Advancement Vice President at Brigham Young University has been called to serve as a Mission President for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Richardson oversaw athletics at the faith-based university.
Since 2014, Richardson has been in the Vice President role at BYU and individuals such as athletic director Tom Holmoe reported to him. Richardson took over as VP after Kevin Worthen was appointed to school president.

Richardson’s calling as Mission President will begin on July 1st where he and his wife Lisa Richardson will serve in the Minnesota Minneapolis Mission.
Mission Presidents serve The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in their roles for a total of three years. This will now leave an opening in one of the most important roles on BYU’s campus.
Tasks such as contract extensions for head coaches are signed off by the Advancement of Vice President. Along with overseeing athletics, Richardson also oversaw University Communications, BYU Broadcasting, alumni, external relations and philanthropy.
No official comment was provided by Brigham Young University on when the search will begin for Richardson’s replacement.
