SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Spring football is well and truly underway at the University of Utah as they prepare for their upcoming 2020 season. However, this Spring there seems to be far more questions than answers following a 2019 season that tore the heart out of every Utah fan with back-to-back losses.

Those questions will likely not be answered until the fall, however, that did not stop Tom Hackett and Steve Bartle from talking about a few of them on their latest podcast episode.

College Football Has A Dark Side

During the episode, Hackett and Bartle start their conversation discussing the recent arrest and ultimate dismissal from the team for wide receiver Terrell Perriman who is being investigated for allegedly raping a 17-year-old. This is not the first time a college football player has been accused of something this serious, and nor will it be the last, unfortunately. Which begs us to ask the question, does college football have a problem? Do collegiate athletes have the correct understanding of what is appropriate and what is not when pursuing romantic partners?

These kids are generally put on a pedestal at a very young age and are constantly told how talented they are from a variety of people. Does that have an effect on the way they act? It seems as though with the addition of social media, college football is being flooded with more and more egotistical personalities that are hurting themselves and others in the process.

Position Battles To Watch In The Spring

The biggest battle to watch is the quarterback position. Utah has three players who are vying to lead their team into the 2020 season. Drew Lisk, Cameron Rising, and Jake Bentley will fight for the position throughout Spring and well into fall camp, it seems.

“Last Thursday during the two-minute drill, Lisk took the first reps, drove right down the field and scored a touchdown. Rising then jumped in and drove right down the field and scored a touchdown. Bently did not take any reps on that day,” Bartle said on the It’s Utah’s World podcast.

The other big question mark on the offensive side lies on the offensive line. Currently, Utah has six players that are legitimately vying for a starting position- Nick Ford has been pushed to left tackle, Keaton Bills at left guard, Orlando Umana at center, Braeden Daniels slots in at right guard and Simi Moala at right tackle, Bamidele Olaseni is listed on the two-deep behind Moala at right tackle.

The defense has the most question marks, however. Utah will attempt to replace its entire secondary. Vonte Davis and Stone Azarcon are the starting free and strong safeties respectively while Bronson Boyd and JaTravis Broughton got the nod at cornerback.

The highest-rated recruit in school history joins the Utes for Spring camp and has made an immediate impact at the nickelback position. Clark Phillips III has impressed the coaches and his teammates during the short stint he has spent with the team.
