SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The state of Utah has been fortunate to boast some very impressive football players over the years. Athletes that have gone on to play long careers in the National Football league, some have even been fortunate enough to secure the Lombardi Trophy and bring home a Super Bowl ring.

Before their college careers took off, they were noticed at the high school level. Well before most fans knew who they were.

At KSL Sports, I asked my peers to share their votes on who they thought had the best high school film.

I will start, now granted, let’s not forget that my time in the States following American football started back in 2012. I have not been around the state or the game of football to share a diverse, historic opinion on the subject matter.

Regardless, I remember sitting in the Utah football locker room alongside my fellow teammates and coming across the tape of one of Timpview High School’s finest, Britain Covey. Covey played quarterback in high school, before making the transition to wide receiver once he joined the Utes. His high school film is ridiculous. The  5 foot 9 inch, 170-pound quarterback/all-purpose back shredded opposing defenses with his feet. He ran rings around defenders, toying with them at times hoping someone would at least challenge him. Nobody could.

I was in awe.

He ended his high school career as a two-time 4A MVP, three-time State Champion, he was Mr. Football for the state of Utah his senior year and went 26-0 as a starter. He averaged 10 yards per carry his senior year, scoring 26 touchdowns on the way while also throwing the football at 72 percent efficiency.

In the video above, if you do not have 12 minutes to spare, do not stress. Just watch the first couple of minutes and you will soon understand why Covey was crowned Mr. Football.

Josh Davis A Close Second

There was a slew of other very impressive tapes with a number of athletes getting high praise for their high school achievements.

Current Weber State tailback Josh Davis was a force to be reckoned with at Alta High School. The prolific running back could not be stopped as he used his big, strong running style to bowl over linebackers and skip passed safeties averaging 203 yards per game his senior season in 2016.

Since Davis has joined Weber State University, he has been voted as a two-time All American as well as being named a two-time All-Big Sky First Team.

Other Nominations

Puka Nacua was also a popular vote by the KSL Sports team. The current Washington Husky and former Orem Tiger was a standout wide receiver during his high school days. He was an unstoppable force on the outside and helped the Tigers to two state championships in his junior and senior seasons. Nacua was named the 2018 Polynesian Bowl MVP, 2018 Utah Gatorade Football Player of the Year and won the 2018 All American Bowl MVP.

Austin Kafentzis dominated at Jordan High School, home of the Beetdiggers. Kafentzis threw for 3862 yards his senior season, adding 40 touchdowns through the air and 25 on the ground. The pro-style QB committed to Wisconsin before transferring to BYU. Ironically, he was recruited by current Utah offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig, when Ludwig was the acting coordinator at the Wisconsin Badgers.
