SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Tony Finau’s positive COVID-19 test comes just as the big swinging Utahn was hoping to string a few events together in preparation for the upcoming Masters Tournament. The timing is not ideal.

Long Time Between Swings

His last PGA Tour event was the U.S. Open at Winged Foot Golf Club that concluded on September 20th when he finished in a tie for eighth.

Prior to the positive test, Finau had spent two weeks back home in Utah touring charity events and spending time with his family. He attended his annual Tony Finau Foundation tournament at Alpine Country Club while also making an appearance at his coach’s Boyd Summerhays annual charity tournament in North Salt Lake City.

It is unclear where Finau contracted the virus.

What Now?

Regardless, Finau will be sidelined for the foreseeable future as he must clear two negative tests 24 hours apart following the absence of any COVID-19 related symptoms.

It is likely that Finau will miss at least the next two PGA Tour events; this weekends Shriners Hospital For Children’s Open and The CJ Cup. If Finau can return to the Tour following the conclusion of a two-week absence then he will only have three events to prepare for the Masters Tournament.

Furthermore, Finau was playing well and was competing in every tournament he entered as he continues to search for his second PGA Tour victory.

Finau’s only victory came in 2016 when he won the Puerto Rico Open and despite posting multiple top 10 finishes in the years since Finau is yet to secure a second win on tour.

For now, Finau will rest and begin his recovery process as he hopes to return to full health as soon as possible.
