No. 14 Logan’s Strong Start Leads To First Round Victory Over No. 19 Hurricane

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The 14-seed Logan Grizzlies took care of No. 19 Hurricane, 43-22 to advance to the second round of the 4A state football playoffs.

The Grizzlies jumped out to a 21-7 first half lead and added one touchdown in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, both teams scored 15 points apiece. Kody Kirk threw five touchdown passes in the win for Logan. He connected with Jaylen Sargent twice and once to Gage Jenson, Jaelin Hoth and Matthew Mason. Mason also scored a TD on the ground. Conner Neilson and Bubba Moore each scored a rushing touchdown in the loss for Hurricane.

Logan will move on to the second round to face No. 3 Snow Canyon (8-1) on Friday, Oct. 30 at 6 p.m.

Here are all of the results from the first round of the 4A State Football Playoffs.

No. 17 Mountain Crest 14 at No. 16 Desert Hills 44

The Thunder trailed 7-6 at the halftime break before outscoring the Mustangs 38-7 in the second half. Cooper Gardner and Luke Burbank scored Mountain Crest’s two touchdowns. Noah Fuailetolo and Zach Ford each threw a TD pass for Desert Hills, finding Awsten Turnbow and Fuailetolo once each. Gage Brenneman added a rushing score. Hendrick Lusk ran a kick return 70-yards for a touchdown.

Desert Hills will move on to the second round to face No. 1 Sky View (9-0) on Friday, Oct. 30 at 6 p.m.

No. 20 Tooele 21 at No. 13 Cedar Valley 28

Cedar Valley held a 21-14 lead at the half before both teams scored a touchdown in the second half as the Aviators avoid the upset. For Cedar Valley, Payton Weber and Vili Mausia each ran in a touchdown as well as threw touchdown passes to Lucas Peck and Taygen Hansen. Dylan Makoni and Payton Sprouse each had a passing TD, connecting with Sprouse and Tabor Shepard for Tooele. The Buffaloes also had a rushing TD from Mateaki Helu.

Cedar Valley will advance to the second round to battle No. 4 Ridgeline (7-1) on Friday, Oct. 30 at 6 p.m.

No. 21 Ben Lomond 17 at No. 12 Ogden 35

The Tigers trailed Ben Lomond, 10-7 at the half but they were able to outscore the Scots in the second half, 28-7 to get the win. Ryan Alvarez ran in both of Ben Lomond’s touchdowns. For Ogden, Logan Shobe scored all of their 5 touchdowns on the ground.

Ogden will move on to the second round to face No. 5 Park City (8-2) on Friday, Oct. 30 at 6 p.m.

No. 18 Canyon View 3 at No. 15 Crimson Cliffs 45

The Mustangs had a 35-3 at the half and that’s all they needed to get the first round win. Chase Hansen threw four touchdowns and ran in one. He connected with Packer Butler three times and Easton Droubay once. Creed Leonard added a rushing score.

Crimson Cliffs will advance to the second round to battle No. 2 Pine View (9-1) on Friday, Oct. 30 at 6 p.m.

No. 22 Uintah at No. 11 Mountain View

This game was canceled due to a COVID-19 outbreak at Uintah. The Utes have forfeited the game. Mountain View will move on to the second round to face No. 6 Stansbury (7-2) on Friday, Oct. 30.

Teams that received a first round bye: No. 1 Sky View, No. 2 Pine View, No. 3 Snow Canyon, No. 4 Ridgeline, No. 5 Park City, No. 6 Stansbury, No. 7 Green Canyon, No. 8 Cedar, No. 9 Dixie, No. 10 Bear River.
