Tony Finau Tied For Lead Heading Into Sunday At The American Express

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Tony Finau is tied for the lead entering the final round tomorrow at The American Express.

Finau, 31, has only won once on the PGA Tour with his lone victory coming in 2016 when he won the Puerto Rico Open. Viktor Hovland broke the Puerto Rico Open curse when he won the Mayakoba Golf Classic in December of 2020, he became the only player to win the Puerto Rico Open and another PGA Tour tournament.

During the third round, Finau made eight birdies, one bogey, and a double bogey to finish with a five-under-par, 67.

He is joined atop the leaderboard with Si Woo Kim and Max Homa at 15-under-par.

Finau began the day one shot behind the leaders and started his round with a bogey off the first tee. However, he regathered himself and notched four birdies before he made the turn.

The double bogey came on the dangerous par 3, 13th when Finau’s tee shot found the water. After taking a penalty stroke and knocking his third onto the green he was left with a 20 foot putt for bogey which he missed.

Nonetheless, the double bogey was quickly forgotten when Finau birdied the following three holes to put himself back in contention.

During his career, Finau has been in contention on a number of occasions. None more famously than at the 2019 Masters when he was paired with eventual champion Tiger Woods on the last day at The Masters.

Being at the top of the leaderboard entering the final day is nothing new for Finau. Finishing tournaments strongly and breaking away from the rest of the field on Sunday has been Finau’s kryptonite thus far.

Finau’s Sunday tee time is yet to be announced.
