SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Mike Weir has concluded the first round of the Senior PGA Championship entering the clubhouse at two-under-par and in a current tie for third.

Weir held a two-shot lead with four holes to play but back-to-back bogeys on 15 and 16 dropped him back to two-under. His start was superb, however, as he found himself four-under-par through the first six holes before his first bogey fell on seven. He made the turn at three-under-par.

Then, his second bogey dropped on 10, two more birdies on 12 and 13 before the final two bogeys to conclude his opening round.

Weir struck the ball superbly and appears to be in great form entering the major tournament.

Last week at the Regions Tradition he ended in a tie for 25th.

Weir, 51, has played 15 events on the PGA Champions Tour this year and is ranked 15th amongst the field on the season having made just over $1 million in prize money to date.

Earlier this month at the Insperity Invitational, Weir cemented his first victory of the season after suffering a pair of second-place finishes earlier in the year.

The total purse for the PGA Championship is $3.5 million with the winner expected to take home over $500,000. The purse grew half a million dollars from a year ago.

Alex Cejka is currently tied with Steve Stricker in first place at three-under-par. However, Stricker still has 10 holes to play before his opening round concludes.
