SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – It was a disastrous opening two rounds at the 121st U.S. Open for Tony Finau who missed the cut by five shots and will take no further action at Torrey Pines South this weekend.

Rough Two Days At Torrey

Finau, 31, began the second round at three-over-par and needed an even second round to make the cut on the number. However, that was not meant to be for Finau who shot a five-over-par second round to give himself no chance at making the cut.

His second-round consisted of six bogeys and just one birdie. He began his Friday tee time on the 10th tee and got off to a bogey-bogey start to immediately catapult down the leaderboard two-over-par through two holes. His next bogey came on the par 4, 14th and his final front nine bogey came on 18.

He made the turn at four-over-par and seven-over-par for the tournament.

His only birdie of the day came on the par 4, 5th. It immediately followed his fifth bogey of the day.

Finau’s tournament ended the way it began, with a bogey on the closing hole of the second round.

Sadly, Finau entered the tournament as one of the favorites. He has traditionally played well at Torrey Pines South. Earlier in the year, he finished in a T2 at the Farmers Insurance Open and his worst score over his last five rounds at Torrey Pines South was a T13.

Home For Practice

People on social media were skeptical that Finau had a wrist injury that was preventing him from playing his best round of golf. However, nothing of the sort has been confirmed. It remains unknown if Finau played with an injury or not.

Nevertheless, Finau will pack his bags and head back home where he will be in need of some much needed practice.

Finau continues to chase a much eluded second PGA Tour victory. His lone win came in 2016 when he won the Puerto Rico Open despite being ranked in the top 20 of the Official World Golf Rankings for much of the previous five years.
