Pac-12 AD’s Discussing Possible Reduction In Conference Football Games

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Pac-12 Athletic Directors and incoming commissioner George Kliavkoff are discussing reducing the number of conference football games.

As it stands right now, each Pac-12 football team plays nine conference games per season. Under commissioner Larry Scott – who will end his tenure on June 30 – didn’t want to reduce the games down to eight and rather wanted the other conferences to move to nine games.

All 12 AD’s in the conference met with Kliavkoff in Las Vegas last week and had heavy discussions of many changes they want to implement when the former MGM executive takes over on July 1. Some of those Athletic Directors spoke to Jon Wilner of the Bay Area News Group.

Another topic of discussion is to eliminate the two divisions in football so that the top two teams in the conference compete for the championship and a College Football Playoff bid. The CFP is expected to approve a 12-team expansion this fall that would begin sometime in the next couple of years.

Over the years, Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham has not leaned one way or the other on the number of conference games being played during the season but wants all power-5 conferences to play the same amount of conference games.
