TOKYO — After a year of postponement, which meant an added year of stress and anticipation for Team U.S.A., the Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo have come to an end.

Our Team KSL has been in Tokyo, gone through dozens of COVID-19 tests, and shared in those ups and downs with everyone back home.

Alex CabreroShara Park and Jeremiah Jensen wanted to close out their experience by sharing a few gold medal moments of their own.

“I’ll go with USA Men’s Basketball. They put this team together in three weeks before the Olympics. They lost exhibition games. They lost their opener to France. Everybody says this team has no chance. They had doubters. They had criticism. And they went out after that — they came together each and every game and got better. They proved the doubters wrong. They won gold to extend USA’s dominance in basketball,” said Jeremiah.

“I’ve got to give it to Nathaniel Coleman with Team USA Climbing — first time climbing was in the Olympics. He’s from Murray, Utah, born and raised there. He goes out, and not only does he barely squeak into the finals, but then, he ends up with a silver medal. It was pretty cool seeing that around his neck. I’ve been covering Nathaniel for about two years now, and to see that moment — success on his face — that was absolutely awesome,” said Alex.

He went on to say, “And a quick honorable mention, maybe a silver medal, to the volunteers here. The volunteers, they made these Olympics happen, no doubt about it. Sometimes, it looks like they were guarding empty parking lots because that was their assignment before fans weren’t allowed, but the volunteers definitely deserve some mention here, for sure.”

“I want to just give my gold medals, first of all, to all of our Utah athletes and those connections to Utah. We had so many unique stories. I loved following Jake Gibb and his family — our hometown Bountiful beach volleyball Olympian. What a fun experience to see him play in his last Olympic Games,” said Shara.

“And then my other gold medal, it really goes to Tokyo, the city itself. I have been so impressed with how beautifully structured this city is — the transportation, just how clean it is, how kind people have been to us everywhere we’ve gone. So, my gold medal also goes just to the city of Tokyo itself,” she continued.

“We have loved being here at these Games. It has been different, COVID was certainly, uh,” said Shara.

“It was not your normal Olympics,” Jeremiah interjected.

“It wasn’t your normal Olympics, but we still enjoyed our time here in Tokyo. So, from all of us here at KSL-TV, our crew here in Tokyo, we want to say thank you for being with us here on this journey and we will see you back home soon,” Shara concluded.
