SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Something that fans don’t hear often when it comes to Utah football fall camp scrimmages is the offense outperforming the defense.

That was the case on Saturday morning when Utah took the field for their first scrimmage of Camp Kyle at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

“Good clean scrimmage, the first time out with extensive live work, very pleased, a lot of good stuff,” Kyle Whittingham said after the scrimmage. “Teaching moments, situational teaching in particular, both quarterbacks looked good, the first two guys, it’s gonna be a close competition. Right now it’s neck and neck. A lot of good things out of the offense, the offense had a better day. Held some guys out on the defense, Devin Lloyd, Mika Tafua, some premier guys were not out there, but still the offense had great juice, a lot of passion and they made plays, really good in the throw game. That was probably the highlight of the day was the production we had in the throw game.”

The big story in fall camp is the quarterback battle between Charlie Brewer and Cam Rising. Whittingham explained what both QB’s are doing well in camp.

“They’re both throwing the ball very accurately, taking care of it,” Whittingham said. “Making good decisions, getting the tempo of the offense where it needs to be, leading, making very few mistakes.”

Besides the quarterbacks, Whittingham mentioned some targets in the passing game that performed well in the scrimmage.

“Theo Howard had very nice day today, the tight ends, Solomon Enis, Britain Covey didn’t play,” Whittingham stated. “Devaughn Vele showed well, JD (Jaylen)  Dixon. Tavion Thomas was really good in the run game. So we got some things going for us, the offensive line protecting that was really the catalyst to the throw game was the protection.”

Utah will wrap up fall camp this upcoming week and prepare for their season opener against Weber State on Thursday, September 2 at 5:30 p.m. MT at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
