SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah State men’s basketball team dropped its season opener to begin the Ryan Odom era with a home loss to the UC Davis Aggies.

The Aggies of Logan hosted the Aggies of California at Dee Glen Smith Spectrum on Tuesday, November 9.

UC Davis came away with a 72-69 victory over USU.

It was Ryan Odom’s first game as Utah State’s head coach.

After trailing by five points at halftime, the home Aggies outscored UC Davis by two points in the second half. It wasn’t enough as the Aggies of California did enough to close out the game in the final minutes of play.

With 2:23 remaining in the second half, Utah State’s RJ Eytle-Rock made a layup to knot the scoreboard up at 61 points apiece.

25 seconds later, Ezra Manjon connected on a jump shot to put UC Davis up for good.

Over the final two minutes of the game, Manjon scored six points, including a pair of free throws in the final seconds to ice the game for the road Aggies.

Utah State finished the game shooting 36.1 percent overall and 26.7 percent on three-pointers.

Utah State had two players reach double figures in scoring.

New USU forward Brandon Horvath led the Aggies with 19 points on 7-14 field goals. Horvath added seven rebounds and one block.

Justin Bean recorded a double-double with 16 points on 5-10 shooting to go along with 13 boards.

With the loss, the Aggies fell to an 0-1 record.

Utah State’s next game is against the Richmond Spiders on Friday, November 12 at 4 p.m. (MDT). The game will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network and The Zone Sports Network (1280 AM).
