PROVO, Utah – If you want to attend to an indoor event on the campus of BYU, you’ll need to show proof of a vaccination or negative COVID-19 test.

Brigham Young University, which is owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, announced the decision on Monday. The proof of full vaccination or a negative test goes into effect beginning January 20th.

This rule applies to all events on campus, including athletics if there are more than 100 attendees.

BYU made this move to require proof of vaccination status or a negative test after “the recent rise in local and national COVID-19 cases.”

The Men’s Basketball team is currently No. 10 nationally for per game attendance this season averaging more than 15,000 fans per game at the Marriott Center. Throughout the home season thus far, fans have only been required to wear masks.

“The safety of our students, faculty, staff and campus guests remains the top priority at BYU,” said Brigham Young University President Kevin J. Worthen in a written statement. “These policies will enable us to continue to gather together and share a home court advantage, live music, theatre and dance experiences while fulfilling part of our university mission to reflect a loving, genuine concern for the welfare of our neighbor.”

BYU’s definition of being fully vaccinated is defined by the CDC’s guidelines. Which is an individual can document that at least 14 days have passed since they received the final dose of an FDA-authorized COVID-19 vaccination.

For children 12 or under, they will be permitted to enter venues on BYU’s campus without showing proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test.

Since vaccinations became available, BYU has not required its students or staff to receive an FDA-authorized COVID-19 vaccine. Instead, the school has asked its staff and students to self report their current status.

BYU began classes for the 2022 winter semester on January 3.
