SALT LAKE CITY – Utah’s Tony Finau is enduring one of the roughest form patches of his career as he was again beaten today by Takumi Kanaya who ranks 63rd in the official world golf rankings.

The recent loss was to Kanaya came on the second day of the WGC Match Play event occurring in Austin, Texas. Finau lost to Lucas Herbert 4&3 on Wednesday.

The consecutive defeats mean Finau will once again fail to make the cut and will likely enter The Masters in very bad form.

Tomorrow Finau will play Xander Schauffele, the group’s highest-ranked player, in a match that will have no bearing on Finau’s weekend’s plans.

The Masters History

Fortunately, Finau has rejuvenated his career at Augusta before. In fact, Augusta National has become one of Finau’s most successful stops on the PGA Tour. Since 2018, Finau has finished tied for 10th or better in three of the four starts. He has made the cut in every tournament with his worst finish occurring in 2020 when he ended in a tie for 38th.

For whatever reason, Finau loves the Augusta National track. It clearly suits his game.

However, in no other year has Finau entered The Masters in this poor of form.

It will be interesting to see how Finau handles himself entering the biggest golf tournament, and his favorite, on the calendar year.

This Seasons Numbers

This season Finau’s issues have occurred off the tee and on and around the green. He is currently ranked 193rd on tour averaging just 52% of fairways hit. When it comes to SG: Around the Green he is ranked 146th. Finau is usually reasonably accurate off the tee, his issues over the course of his career have generally occurred on or around the greens.
